Developing subnational multivariate housing by ethnicity statistics from administrative data, England and Wales: 2020

16 February 2023

Today we have published our feasibility research on producing multivariate housing by ethnicity statistics for England and Wales using administrative data. We combined admin-based housing and admin-based ethnicity datasets to establish that the proportion of addresses which had at least one property characteristic, at least one person resident and at least one person with a stated ethnicity was 79.0% for England and 78.1% for Wales. Regionally, we established that address-level coverage was lowest in London (69.4%) and highest in the North East (82.4%).

Future work to develop this feasibility research will include updating the admin-based housing by ethnicity dataset (ABHED) to a 2021 reference period. This will allow us to make comparisons with Census 2021 housing by ethnicity data once released, as well as research to improve the methods used to produce the ABHED.

Alongside today’s release, we have also published occupied address-level ethnicity measures for multivariate statistics, England and Wales: 2020. This article presents initial approaches used to identify occupied address-level ethnicity, which have fed into our feasibility research on producing housing by ethnicity statistics.

We welcome feedback on the quality, value and impact that using these figures would have, and our planned future developments. Email us your comments and questions and include Housing by ethnicity in the subject line of your response.
