ASHE Synthetic data pilot
The Office for National statistics (ONS) are inviting prospective ASHE users to participate in a synthetic data pilot study aiming to assess the usefulness of synthetic data.
User feedback received through this pilot will help the ONS to maximise benefits of data access and further explore the feasibility of synthesising more data in future.

SRS Access Changes - Coming Soon
Following the SRS enhancements implemented in 2022 and as advised in previous researcher newsletters, multi-factor authentication (MFA) will be coming to the SRS very soon.
MFA is being introduced as a mandatory additional security measure and will bring us into line with best practice for secure services.
This will be launched soon with a change to the SRS log in page and will be followed by a gradual roll out to groups of SRS users over the following weeks.
Users will be contacted directly by email when scheduled to cut-over to the new arrangements and full instructions will be provided at that point.
To help the transition please ensure that your email address and mobile number are registered correctly on the RAS system
Changes to the log-in page will be announced very soon, so please look out for the email which will be sent to your registered email address.
Further details will follow, however, should you have any queries in the meantime, please contact SRS Customer Support
Funding opportunity: 20 PhD studentship on quantitative research using linked administrative data
ADR UK is delighted to announce the 20 PhD studentship opportunities to be hosted by supervisors across 13 of the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) Doctoral Training Partnerships (DTPs). These PhD studentships will use ADR UK’s new linked flagship datasets to answer policy-relevant research questions. Students are expected to begin their PhDs in October 2023 and will be funded through an investment of £1.9 million from ADR UK.

Funding opportunity: Research using ADR England flagship datasets
ADR UK is inviting applications for Research Fellowships to conduct research and analysis demonstrating the policy impact potential of key ADR England flagship datasets. Applications close 24 January 2023.
Applicants must use key ADR England flagship data for their fellowship. For this round, ADR UK are prioritising funding for applications using Longitudinal Education Outcomes (LEO), Growing Up in England (GUIE) & Annual Survey of Hours and Earnings (ASHE) - 2011 Census.

Dataset of the Month
Youth Endowment Fund
The Youth Endowment Fund (YEF) was founded by the Home Office to evaluate which interventions and services best prevent children becoming involved in violence.
Data on the children in YEF trials and evaluations are archived within the ONS SRS and combined with unique, anonymous identifiers from the Department for Education (DfE). This enables accredited researchers to combine YEF trial data with education and other linked datasets to evaluate the long-term impact of the programmes on educational attainment, offending and other outcomes.
The YEF data archive in the SRS currently holds data from the evaluation of DARE25, a school-based programme that aims to encourage children to make safer, healthier and more informed choices and keep them safe from involvement in crime and violence. The aim of the programme was to provide information on various topics including dealing with stressful situations, peer pressure, and balancing risks and consequences, and to develop skills such as communication and stress management.
This evaluation of DARE25 aimed to ascertain the impact of the programme on behavioural and emotional problems, which are typically associated with later involvement in crime and violence.
If you would like to learn more about the YEF data archive, please contact: data@youthendowmentfund.org. To access this dataset within the ONS SRS, please contact the SRS Customer Support team: srs.customer.support@ons.gov.uk

Case Study of the Month
The lifelong health and wellbeing trajectories of people who have been in care
A study using secure data found that cared-for children had a deeply unequal chance of enjoying the same social and economic advantages in adulthood as other children. Findings show that there were highly consistent impacts on health, socioeconomic circumstances, family life and living arrangements, the extent of which varied depending on care arrangements. This research provided evidence for the Independent Review of Children’s Social Care, which led to the UK Government pledging an official implementation strategy including further support activities. The project also produced a range of resources to help practitioners and policymakers to understand the disadvantages experienced by adults who had been in care as children.
