The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has published the next phase of Census 2021 topic summaries for England and Wales looking at ethnic group, national identity, language and religion (release page).
This includes univariate data (one variable only) down to Output Area (OA) level, where possible.
This release gives information from Census 2021 about:
- which ethnic groups people identified with
- the main language people use
- how well people, who do not have English as a main language, could speak English
- how people describe their national identity
- which religious groups people identified with.
As in previous topic summary releases, we have produced a number of statistical bulletins explaining the data, showing charts, tables and supporting information including statistical methods and quality measures. You can view them below:
How am I represented in Census 2021 data?
People could identify as they wished in Census 2021, using online search options and paper write-ins and responding on a tablet, computer, phone or a traditional paper form. But how is data on the myriad ways people chose to identify being turned into meaningful statistics? In this blog Sarah Wood explains more about the census ethnic group, national identity, language and religion topic summary release.
Application Programming Interface
Today we have launched our Application Programming Interface (API) for topic summaries enabling users to filter datasets via geography. This allows users to request a list of available geographies for each population type.
