Census 2021 UK armed forces veterans' published today

10 November 2022

First Census 2021 insights into UK armed forces veterans have been published and the UK wide veterans’ survey is now live

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has published the next phase of Census 2021 topic summaries for England and Wales looking at UK armed forces veterans (release page).

It shows the numbers of veterans for all geographical areas down to Middle Super Output Area (MSOA) level.

Further information on other characteristics of veterans such as health, education and employment will follow in our releases next year.

The Census 2021 results about UK armed forces veterans include data about people who have previously served in the regular forces, reserve forces or both.

This answers questions like:

  • how many UK armed forces veterans lived in households and communal establishments at the time of the census?
  • how many households had one or more persons who’d served in the UK armed forces?
  • which local authorities had the highest proportion of UK armed forces veterans?

The Veterans' Survey

Your views matter, so please take part today.

Hearing from our veteran community is vital and that is why the government has launched a UK-wide Veterans’ Survey.

This is the first-ever exercise to collect feedback from the veteran community across the UK coordinated by the Office for Veterans’ Affairs and the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The online survey launched today will be live for 12 weeks. The survey gives ex-UK Armed Forces personnel and their families the opportunity to provide direct feedback to the government on their experiences, access to and use of services for veterans.

It is important we hear a wide range of views and we would like to encourage as many ex-UK Armed Forces veterans and their families to share feedback as possible.
