Today the ONS published articles relating to population estimates, the methods behind them, how they will be informed by Census 2021 results, and a framework to provide feedback on our population estimates.

Accurate and truly representative population statistics are central to the Office for National Statistics’ mission of data for the public good. Following the successful census in March 2021, now we are pulling out all the stops to make sure our numbers reflect recent and ongoing population changes. Jen Woolford explains how we are prioritising this important work and collaborating in new ways to deliver it.

Receiving user insights on local population levels and change, England and Wales: August 2022

Today we have published a framework to build on the process to receive feedback that formed part of the local authority census quality assurance exercise. Wider users of population estimates will now have a continual and structured platform by which to provide feedback and evidence with regards to data about the size and nature of the population pertaining to a local area.

This methodology article outlines developments to produce mid-2021 population estimates rolled forward from Census 2021, by local authority district, age and sex. It provides details of changes to our regular methods needed to roll forward the 3 months from Census Day to mid-year and discusses the outstanding issues we are still working on.
