The Integrated Data Analysis Team (IDAT) at ONS has recently published the first descriptive stage of their analysis using MoJ-DfE linked data.

The article explores the education and social care background of young people who went on to receive custodial sentences, as well as looking at their peers who either received non-custodial sentences or had no criminal convictions. It finds that 1.5% of 23- to 24-year olds who attended school in England had received a custodial sentence by the end of 2017 and that a large share of those with custodial sentences had lower levels of educational attainment or had been identified as vulnerable during childhood.

The linked data, available to accredited researchers through the Secure Research Service (SRS), links education and social care records with the Police National Computer.
