Travel and tourism statistics newsletter

27 November 2020

news image

Welcome to the 2nd travel and tourism statistics newsletter, which includes news on recent and upcoming releases and events, and updates on the work we have been doing in the last quarter.

IPS returning to the field

We are expecting the survey to restart in mid-December. A lot of work has been done to make sure it is safe for the interviewers who will be working in smaller teams to allow social distancing. Plans are set up to allow them to familiarise themselves with new working conditions at their sites before interviewing starts. It is not known how many passengers will be coming through during shifts, but we will be monitoring this to help us maximise the number of interviews.

Reviewing travel and tourism statistics

The travel and tourism review have begun and a small ONS team has been set up to take this work forward. So far, the team has;

  • Established a governance and reporting structure to ensure the review is delivered to an agreed timetable and any issues and risks that arise are managed
  • Developed an expert panel which includes a range of internal and external travel and tourism stakeholders to help progress the review
  • Begun identifying possible alternative data sources which can be explored in collecting travel and tourism information
  • Held initial meetings with some stakeholders to understand more about their needs for travel and tourism data

We will be engaging regularly with our users as we go through the review and will continue to update you through a variety of channels including our newsletter.

Travel and tourism data during Covid-19

Data collection was suspended for the period covered by the Q2 2020 publication, so the figures below are based on administrative sources and modelling. As a result, these results should be treated with caution.

Overseas residents made 398 thousand visits to the UK in Quarter 2 (April to June) 2020; this was 96% fewer than Quarter 2 2019 as travel reduced due to Covid-19. These residents spent £218 million on their visits to the UK in Quarter 2 2020; this was 97% less than in Quarter 2 2019.

UK residents made 939 thousand visits abroad in Quarter 2 2020, which was 96% fewer than the corresponding period the previous year, which is attributable to Covid-19. UK residents spent £402 million on visits abroad in the second quarter of 2020; this was 98% less than in Quarter 2 2019.

Presentations will be given at the event, outlining the methodology and data acquired for quarter 2 of 2020 during the pandemic. There will also be time to raise questions on travel and tourism statistics.

The ONS will be holding two separate webinars:

Thursday 3 December 2020 – 10:30am – midday

Friday 11 December 2020 – 10:00am – 11:30am

If you would like to attend either of these events, please register your interest, stating which webinar you would like to attend using the email address Travel.and.Tourism@ons.gov.uk
