Coronavirus and the social impacts on Great Britain: 26 June 2020

Commenting on the findings, Hugh Stickland from the Office for National Statistics said:

“We continue to see a very mixed picture of how the pandemic is impacting on people’s lives. It’s particularly interesting to see that some are now considering their experience and what changes they want to make to their lives in the future.”

For the first time, this week’s ONS survey asked if people had made any positive lifestyle changes since the coronavirus outbreak and, where they had, which they would like to retain into the longer-term future.

The weekly survey, relating to the period 18 - 21 June, continued to cover regular topics such as the extent to which people were leaving their homes, meetings others and use of face coverings.

Findings include:

  • Almost half of adults (43%) reported that, since the coronavirus outbreak, there were changes in their lifestyle that were for the better. Of these, 56% said that they were now able to spend more quality time with people they lived with. A slower pace of life was mentioned by 50% and 47% preferred that they were spending less time travelling.
  • Among those aged 70 or over, only 24% said there had been any positive lifestyle changes. Being more in touch with neighbours, along with having a slower pace of life were both mentioned by 52%, followed by 47% mentioning keeping in touch more with family and friends.
