What is this newsletter?

Welcome to the first in a series of newsletters to keep you up to date with Census 2021 developments.

These newsletters are one of the ways we’ll support you to plan and deliver a successful census. We’ll send monthly updates, but as we get closer to the census, we’ll write to you more often.

What's in this issue

Partnership working to deliver a successful census in 2021

We know that local authorities’ understanding and knowledge of their local communities and areas are vital in supporting census activities.

We’ve developed nine strands of partnership activity based on feedback from local authorities on what worked well for the 2011 Census. We’ve added strands of activity to support the digital-first focus for 2021 and to maximise wider use of census data.

The nine strands of partnership activities are below. We’ll be providing more detailed guidance to all local authorities and working with them on actions to support these activities.

1. Development of an address register to ensure fullest coverage.

2. Provision of enumeration intelligence to identify and target local challenges.

3. Identification of community liaison contacts.

4. Help in the recruitment of field staff.

5. Provision of practical support to field operation(for example meeting rooms or parking permits).

6. Support for online and Assisted Digital.

7. Support for local publicity and media relations.

8. Provision of local data to support quality assurance (and the administrative data assessment exercise.

9. Maximising use of census data and supporting use of census outputs within local communities.

We are currently organising local visits to discuss the census and partnership working with groups of local authorities around the country who have already asked to find out more. If you would like to get together with other local authorities in your area and organise a visit, please let us know.

The 2019 Rehearsal

The census aims to count everyone in England and Wales. No other survey gives as much information about us and our society. Having a rehearsal will help make sure our processes, systems and services are running smoothly. The rehearsal is taking place in Carlisle, Ceredigion, Hackney and Tower Hamlets during October 2019. It’s a practice run so we get things right for the real thing in 2021.

Appoint your Census Liaison Manager (CLM) and Assistant Census Liaison Manager (ACLM)-We are delighted to announce that over 79% of local authorities have already appointed an ACLM and over 75% have appointed their CLM. Both roles act as points of contact to co-ordinate census activities within their council. We’ll route our communications through them so it’s important that you keep us up to date with their contact details. If you’d like to know more about either role, please email us.
