Let's swap together for good

This week (8-16 June) is The Great Big Green Week, and this year’s theme is ‘Let’s swap together for good’.

It's the perfect time to think about the green swaps you can make which could add up to make a big difference.

At NWLDC, we now use more environmentally conscious weed killers, we’re seeding our flower beds with wildflowers, and we have switched to peat-free compost.

As part of our drive towards zero carbon, we’ve swapped from diesel to hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO), a by-product of the food waste industry, for our fleet of waste collection vehicles.

We've also switched the rest of our fleet to electric vehicles, which will result in an estimated carbon saving of 1,221 tonnes over the vehicles' lifetime. You can find out more about our how we power our vehicles on our website.

• Chat with us about all things reducing, reusing and recycling.

Let it grow… Top tips for recycling garden waste

It’s that time of year when we see a rise in the amount of garden waste collected from households, with people working on their gardens.

We see a lot of full bins during this busy growing season and we know it can be frustrating if your bin isn’t collected.

Please follow our top tips to help make sure your bin is collected.

• Check what you can and can’t put in the garden waste bin – remember to keep all food waste and soil, compost, turf and peat out of the bin
• Make sure the bin lid is fully closed
• If you regularly run out of space in your garden bin, try these ideas or sign up to the additional garden waste service.

School uniform swap shop wins national award

Our School Uniform Swap Shop campaign has won a national award! The project has been crowned Reuse Initiative of the Year at the Awards for Excellence in Recycling and Waste Management.

The popular swap shops are a sustainable way for families to access school uniforms for free and saved three tonnes of school uniform from going to waste last year.

The Swap Shop is back!

The Swap Shop is running again this summer. Clothes are already available at Newmarket in Coalville and more will be announced for towns and villages across North West Leicestershire soon. Keep an eye on the Swap Shop webpage for updates.

Recycling talks for community groups and schools

Are you involved with a community group, organisation or school?

Our Recycle More team is available to carry out assemblies and talks about all things reducing, reusing and recycling.

The team can also attend events across North West Leicestershire with a stall full of information and recycling-themed freebies to engage with your visitors about reducing our impact on the environment.

Love Your Neighbourhood Weekend of Action

Show the love for your neighbourhood in July and take part in our weekend of action

We’re encouraging communities to come together on 6 and 7 July to make impactful environmental improvements in your neighbourhood.

From organising a litter pick to planting up a shared space or helping elderly neighbours with their gardens, let us know what you have planned so we can celebrate your fantastic work.

Community groups, tenant associations, parish and town councils, uniformed groups, Parent Teacher Associations and more can apply for equipment or a grant of up to £150 to carry out their activities.

Grant applications close on Wednesday 19 June.

Support to cut your energy bills

We have support available to anyone in the district who is looking for ways to cut their energy bills. We're working with other local councils to deliver the Home Upgrade Grant, which may be able to help you if you live in a house without a gas heating system.

If you live in an energy inefficient home, you may be eligible for our Home Energy Retrofit Offer (HERO) scheme, which can provide support to help make your home warmer and more energy efficient.

Save the date: Net Zero Week

Saturday 6 - Friday 12 July 2024

Net Zero Week is the UK’s official national awareness week and the biggest net zero conference. It brings together all the stakeholders needed to reach net zero by 2050, and to ensure Britain’s energy is both secure and affordable.

During the week you can get involved in this live and exclusive online conference, and hear from a wide range of experts sharing insight and commentary from academics, scientists, policy influencers, trade associations and solution providers.
