From fascinating history and gripping stories to music, mystery and even a little mayhem, the National Civil War Centre has unveiled an exciting new programme of talks and special events for upcoming months!

The new season brings together historians, authors, researchers and performers to explore a wide range of subjects, with something to appeal to history enthusiasts and the simply curious alike.  

Whether you're a regular museum visitor or looking for something different to enjoy this autumn and winter, there's never been a better time to discover the fascinating stories waiting to be told at the National Civil War Centre.

From 11-20 September, volunteers across Newark and Sherwood organise events to celebrate our fantastic history and culture.

Discover the stories, people and places that make our district special with this fantastic programme of FREE events, guided tours, exhibitions and workshops.

Discover inspiring stories of courage, compassion and hope at The Buttermarket this autumn. From 29 August to 29 September 2026, two powerful Holocaust remembrance exhibitions will explore extraordinary acts of humanity during the Second World War.

Between Life and Death: Stories of Rescue during the Holocaust shares moving accounts of rescuers and survivors from across Europe, while Irena Sendler: A Life of Courage and Compassion tells the remarkable story of the woman who helped save thousands of Jewish children.

There’s just one month left to catch From Poland: Spirit and Strength at the National Civil War Centre.

Running until Saturday 3 October 2026, the exhibition explores Poland’s rich cultural legacy and the country’s deep connection to Newark and Sherwood.

Bringing together personal stories, historic objects, craft, innovation, and shared experiences, From Poland invites visitors to celebrate Poland’s legacy of creativity and determination.

One of our biggest events of the year is BACK!

Follow the Yellow Brick Road to the National Civil War Centre on Saturday 3 October for the return of the Newark Creates Festival of Creativity!

As part of our Family Saturday programme and inspired by The Wizard of Oz, this year's festival is packed with free drop-in activities for all ages. Create Emerald City-inspired masterpieces, design a witch's hat or magical tiara, craft rainbow ribbon wands and help build a world of imagination. Visitors can also meet our carpenter-in-residence, watch traditional woodworking techniques in action, enjoy creative workshops with artists, and take part in a range of surprise activities throughout the venue.

The event is FREE for Newark and Sherwood residents.

Join expert guides from the National Civil War Centre for one of our regular town tours and discover the stories hidden within Newark's streets, buildings, and landmarks.

Choose from Newark Through Time, a journey through centuries of local history, or Besieged but Never Beaten, which reveals Newark's remarkable role during the British Civil Wars.

With cooler temperatures and autumn colours beginning to appear, it's the perfect opportunity to get outdoors, uncover the town's rich heritage and see Newark from a new perspective.

Tours run every Saturday and places can be booked in advance.

The Heron Music Café is back for Autumn/Winter 2026!

Taking place at the Lifespring Centre, New Ollerton, these free friendly music mornings are filled with familiar tunes and friendly faces.

Sing along to performances by professional musicians, have a dance, tap your feet, or just relax in a warm, welcoming setting.

Sessions run on alternate Fridays from 10:30am to 12pm, beginning on Friday 4 September. Every event is disability and dementia-friendly and booking is not required, just drop-in and join the fun!
