We have given our Community Chest fund a fresh new look and feel, relaunching the scheme as the Grant for Local Opportunities and Wellbeing (GLOW). GLOW provides community groups with the opportunity to apply for funding of up to £1,000 to support local projects.
The scheme, which has been running for more than four years, has so far provided valuable funding to communities across the district with the aim to improve the lives of District Council tenants.
The grants can be used to support a range of projects that will specifically improve amenities in or around social housing areas, including projects with the aim of:
- Resolving community identified issues
- Reducing anti-social behaviour around social housing
- Supporting safety and security measures
- Increasing wellbeing and mental health of tenants
- Tackling issues relating to waste management, litter and dog fouling
- Helping vulnerable groups or individuals
- Supporting tenants into education, learning and volunteering opportunities.
Applying for the grant is simple and can be done by completing a form which can be found on our website.

The Economic Growth team have been working hard with local businesses to launch the Newark and Sherwood Gift Card. So far over 70 businesses in the town centres of Newark, Southwell, Ollerton and Edwinstowe village have signed up. Its aim is to provide a local option for gifts while encouraging people to spend their money with local independent retailers.
Available as either a physical gift card, or an e-card that can be added to digital wallets, the card will make it easy for recipients to ‘shop local’ with a range of local shops, restaurants, salons and service businesses signed up. So, if you are organising any activity and are in need prizes, then please consider the Newark and Sherwood Gift Card.

Our Environmental Services team have finished running their contaminated bin review to better understand what contaminants are making their way into our silver recycling bins.
If your bin is tagged that it has contaminants in it, we have made a new sticker which our waste operatives will stick on your bin and circle the item/s that should not be in there.
Additionally, here are the top four contaminants from the bin review and what to do with them:
Plastic bags and bin liners - please make sure your recycling is clean, dry and loose. Many soft plastic bags such as bread bags, salad bags and fruit and vegetable packaging can be recycled at local supermarkets!
Packets and wrappers - crisp packets can't unfortunately be recycled in the silver bin. Did you know that you can send them to the Crisp Packet Project where they will be transformed into survival blankets for people who are homeless? Cling film, crisp packets, and flexible pouches, including those for pet and baby food, can be recycled at a variety of supermarkets.
Nappies, sanitary waste, and pet waste - please dispose of these items in your household waste bin.
Polystyrene packaging - please don't put polystyrene packaging in your silver bin as we can't recycle them. You may find that what appears to be polystyrene is the ‘new polystyrene’ made from corn starch. This material is more sustainable as it is biodegradable so can be composted or placed in the household waste bin where it will break down. It can even be dissolved in a sink for quick, safe, and easy disposal!
Here is a list of supermarkets who accept and recycle soft plastics in the district: Aldi, Lidl, Co-op, Sainsbury’s Local, Asda, Marks and Spencer, Tesco, Morrisons and Iceland.
Check your local store to ensure they are part of the recycling scheme. Drop-off points are usually located at the entrance to the store.

Giving blood saves lives. The blood you give is a lifeline in an emergency and for people who need long-term treatments.
The NHS need new blood donors from all backgrounds to ensure there is the right blood available for patients who need it.
They need:
- 4,300 blood donations every day on average to meet the needs of our hospitals
- over 140,000 people to donate blood for the first time this year
- 12,000 new Black heritage donors, to meet the growing demand for ethnically matched blood for sickle cell patients who need regular transfusions to stay alive
- more young people aged 17-35 to donate, to ensure we have enough blood for the future
If you are interested in giving blood there is more information on the NHS website.
