Did you know we buy over 12 million Christmas jumpers each year in the UK?
To reduce clothing waste this Christmas, we partnered up with Veolia and Inspire to organise a Nottinghamshire Christmas Jumper Swap across some of the county’s libraries.
Nottinghamshire residents donated their pre-loved Christmas jumpers at one of four drop off points across the county. These Christmas jumpers were then available to swap at Worksop Library Christmas Market and Kimberley Library Christmas Market. Any jumpers that were left over were donated to local shelters, organisations and charities.
A big thank you to everyone who took part in this project, whether by donating a jumper or attending one of the swap events. You’ve all played a part in helping to reduce clothing waste this Christmas!
But, it’s not just at Christmas when clothing is thrown away. In Nottinghamshire, over 70 tonnes of reusable clothes are thrown away each week!
Do you have a real Christmas tree this year? If so, remember that once the festive season is over, you can give your tree a second life! Check out our sustainable options:
Replant your tree – if your tree has roots and/or is in a pot, find a suitable spot in your garden, replant it and water it regularly. With care, it can thrive and become part of your garden for years to come.
Recycling for compost– you can take your real Christmas tree to your local recycling centre where it will be sent to our facility in Oxton for composting. Before taking your tree to the Recycling Centre, please make sure all decorations are removed.
Community collection schemes – many charities offer Christmas tree collections for a small donation. The trees are recycled and your contribution goes towards the local charity. This service is dependent on your postcode – you can search online to see if this service is offered in your area.
Caught red-handed, this naughty elf was trying to sneak batteries into the household bin!
Don’t help the elves cause trouble this Christmas – batteries from toys, fairy lights, and other festive gadgets should never go in your bins at home. They cause fires and lots of damage.
Take them to your local recycling centre or drop-off point at supermarkets instead. Don’t follow this elf’s lead, let’s keep everyone safe this Christmas!
Use up your leftover turkey this Christmas
Each year at Christmas in the UK, we waste over 200,000 turkeys!
If you have lots of leftover turkey and need some new inspiration beyond curries and sandwiches, why not try Love Food Hate Waste’s cranberry turkey pasties instead? With this tasty recipe you can add any leftover meat or stuffing to make a hot meal to take on the go.
During the festive period, many of us will gather with friends and family to celebrate over food and drink. But it is estimated that at this time of year there is around 30% more food waste than the rest of the year.
Freezing food is a great way of avoiding waste, the key is knowing what you can freeze and how to freeze it. For example, did you know you can freeze eggs? Our friends at Love Food Hate Waste have lots more tips on freezing food to help you make the most of your freezer and love your leftovers.
