Hello and welcome to our August 2024 Adoption East Midlands newsletter. We hope you are enjoying the summer break.
This month’s edition of our newsletter features updates on the local launch of the AFDiT (Anti-racist Framework for Decision-making in Transitioning) transracial adoption framework, some exciting new support groups, further information on our multi-disciplinary team and a spotlight on our helpdesk team. Enjoy reading!
A family’s guide to the multi-disciplinary team (MDT) is now available!
We are delighted to announce that we’ve added our family’s guide to the MDT on our adopters’ support hub.
This comprehensive guide is designed to empower adoptive families by providing essential information about the MDT’s roles, services and specialised offerings, enabling parents to actively participate in decision-making and advocate for their child’s wellbeing.

AEM local AFDiT framework launch
Following the national launch of the AFDiT (Anti-racist Framework for Decision-making in Transitioning) framework in May, we hosted a local launch in July.
It was so powerful to hear from people with lived experience of transracial adoption and we are keen to start embedding the framework into our practice. We have been involved in the pilot and development of the framework which was founded and developed by Dr Tam Cane at the University of Sussex.
You can find out more about the framework by visiting their website at the link below.

Adopter’s Solution Circle support group
We had a fantastic turn out at our first Solution Circle in West Bridgford last month. The adopters who came were able to share their own experiences and support one another with ideas and, of course, solutions!
We have two more sessions coming up with space on both dates if you’d like to come along:
- Thursday 5 September - 12.30pm - 2.30pm, Derby
- Wednesday 2 October - 12pm - 2pm, Sutton-in-Ashfield
To book on please visit the link below on our adopters’ hub with all the details and the expression of interest form link.

Introduction to our helpdesk team
This month we’re spotlighting the work of the adoption support helpdesk team, pictured here. Our helpdesk is staffed by dedicated therapeutic social workers who offer support, advice, signposting and short-term practical therapeutic parenting advice. They offer families time to reflect and share their feelings in a safe and non-judgemental environment.
The aim of the helpdesk is to offer timely support to families, ensuring the challenges they are facing can be overcome and the wider team around the child is doing all it can to meet the needs of the adopted child and their family.
