Works on Burton Joyce natural flood management scheme begin

We have been working to install Natural Flood Management interventions within the upper catchment of Burton Joyce.

The £55,000 project is funded by the NCC Green Investment Fund and the Flood Risk Management Capital Budget. It aims to temporarily store water in the upper catchment and release it once flood peaks have passed. This slows flows downstream and reduces the peak flow rate for at-risk areas.

Our delivery partner, Trent Rivers Trust, have completed constructing a new wetland area, a bund, the restoration of two defunct ponds, and 20 leaky barriers in the upper catchment. These measures will not only reduce downstream flood risk, but will also create important habitats within the area.

Community flooding scheme shortlisted for national award

A scheme which sees volunteers support their communities during times of flooding and severe weather has been shortlisted for a local government award.

Our Community Flood Signage Scheme is led by the Flood Risk Management team and has been shortlisted for a Local Government Chronicle (LGC) award in the Community Involvement category.

Flooding team attend Worksop Fun Palace workshop

October saw the Flood Risk Management Team attend the hugely successful Worksop Fun Palace at Worksop Library.

This event, now in its sixth year, brings a variety of free and fun art, science, health and heritage activities to get involved in aimed at anyone of any age.

The team took its Augmented Reality Sandbox and SUDS model along, which allowed visitors to explore how flooding happens and design their own ways to protect lego houses from flooding. Visitors also got the chance to make it virtually rain on the sandbox or really rain on the SUDS model!

The event saw over 1,200 people attend and was a huge success.

Want to create your own Flood Action Group?

Flood Action Groups (FLAGs) are groups of local volunteers who act as a representative voice for their wider community.

They work towards reducing flood risk by identifying key issues in their community, mapping out a flood plan, setting their own agenda and working in partnership with the agencies and authorities that manage flood risk.

The National Flood Forum has a guide on how to form a Flood Action Group.

Flood Risk Management Strategy

Under the Flood and Water Management Act 2010 the County Council is required to publish a Local Flood Risk Management Strategy. The Local Flood Risk Management Strategy looks at flood risk from surface water and ordinary watercourses, and includes an Action Plan which identifies key objectives to shape the delivery of flood risk management services in Nottinghamshire.
