King's Coronation celebrations
If you're holding an event or street party to celebrate the Coronation of His Majesty King Charles III on Saturday 6 May, please consider these top tips to reduce your waste:
- Avoid single use plastics and instead use reusable cups, plates, napkins, tablecloths and cutlery.
- Choose decorations that can be easily recycled like paper flags or why not try to make bunting from old textiles rather than buying new?
- Cater for the right number of guests to avoid too much food going to waste. If you’re arranging a street party, try to plan ahead with your neighbours.
- If there is any food leftover, use it up the next day. Check out our free Love your Leftovers cookbook which was created by Nottinghamshire residents who have shared their best seasonal leftover recipes for inspiration!
- Keep recycling bins handy for your guests to pop their empty drinks cans and plastic bottles into. Remember to recycle glass bottles and jars separately.

Community RePaint Nottinghamshire
Are you one of the 73% of UK adults with unused decorating paint stashed away at home?
Why not dig it out and donate yours to the Community Repaint Nottinghamshire scheme at our Beeston, Calverton, Newark and Warsop recycling centres?
Any paint that is reusable will be stored on site and given away for free to community groups, charities, schools and Nottinghamshire residents. Any paint that is not suitable for reuse will be sent for specialist treatment.
Disposing of liquid paint down a drain pollutes water courses and disposing of it in your general waste can result in damage and disruption when the paint cans are compacted in the back of collection vehicles.
So, if you’ve bought too much, changed your mind about the colour or are just having a spring clean, don’t let yours go to waste. Take it to one of our participating recycling centres (Beeston, Calverton, Newark and Warsop) to help make Nottinghamshire a brighter place to live!

International Compost Awareness Week (7 to 13 May)
Did you know that almost half of the food waste in the average rubbish bin could have been composted?
Composting for just one year can save greenhouse gases equivalent to all the CO2 your washing machine produces in three months - or your kettle produces annually.
Get composting to save money, save resources, grow nutrient rich foods, improve your soil and reduce your impact on the environment.
Or if you’re a composting connoisseur, you may already be composting eggshells, tea bags and coffee grounds but did you know you can even compost feathers, wool socks, animal hair and vacuum dust from wool carpets?
We've produced a handy guide to home composting, which includes information about what to add (and what not to add), plus tips to keep your compost in tip top condition.

National Fish and Chip Day
On Friday 2 June the nation will be celebrating all that is great about the classic dish - fish and chips.
If you’re making a batch at home please remember that cooking oil cannot be placed in your rubbish or recycling bins, nor should it be poured into your sink as it can cause blocked drains.
Instead, used cooking oil can be transformed into green electricity by taking it to one of the 12 Nottinghamshire Recycling Centres.

Recycling centre opening times
Using the bank holidays to have a Spring clean clear out?
Don't forget all 12 of our recycling centres are now open everyday from 8am until 8pm. Bank holidays are usually very busy at the recycling centres so we'd recommend making use of the longer opening times and visiting in the mornings or evenings when the recycling centres tend to be quieter.
