New Notts 85258 mental health text messaging service
This month, Nottinghamshire Healthcare, alongside partners across the Integrated Care System, has launched a new texting messaging service to support people with mental health issues.
As a system, we have teamed up with mental health charity Mental Health Innovations to launch free and confidential mental health support 24/7, through the charity’s text messaging support service Shout.
Anyone living in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire can now text the word Notts 85258 to be connected to a trained Shout volunteer. It’s a 24/7 service and volunteers can help with issues such as anxiety, stress, loneliness, depression and suicidal thoughts.
The conversation, which takes place entirely by text message, aims to help the texter reach a calmer place with a plan to move forward. It will also signpost them to further support available locally. This new service is an excellent addition to talking therapies services available across Nottinghamshire and Notts Healthcare’s urgent mental health support offer, which includes a 24/7 crisis line and crisis sanctuaries.
Social isolation is both a risk and an impact factor for people caring for others. Carers may be socially isolated because of their caring role and the impact it has on them. They may experience abuse from the cared for person and this increases their social isolation. Further, they may be unwilling or unable to talk about it.
A carer is anyone who cares, unpaid, for a friend or family member, who due to illness; disability; substance misuse or a mental health need, cannot cope without their support. A young carer is someone under 18 who does this. Local authorities have clear responsibilities towards carers.
Caring can be very rewarding. However, taking on the responsibilities of caring can have a major impact on an individual’s life, often leading to isolation and exhaustion. For adult carers it can impact on their ability to work and may lead to ill health and for young carers it can hold back their educational progress and limit their social development.
As carers play a valuable role in safeguarding, it is vital that they are supported in their role, either through a referral to the Local Authority for a Carers Assessment, or via a referral to the respective organisations in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire which provide advice and support for carers.

What are Emergency Alerts?
The new Emergency Alerts service will be live from March 19, and you should expect to receive a test message on that day. The system will enable people to be contacted via their mobile phone if their lives are at risk in an emergency. The service will be used to warn you about life-threatening emergencies such as severe flooding.
What will the alert look and sound like?
An Emergency Alert looks and sounds very different to other types of messages such as SMS ‘text messages’. You’ll know if you get an Emergency Alert because you’ll hear a loud, siren-like sound and your phone will use a distinct vibration. A message will appear on your screen until you acknowledge it.
