Christmas can be an expensive time - try these tips
It’s tempting to think your little ones need expensive presents, but often they are happy playing with the box, especially when you join in. Lots of new toys can be overwhelming and affording them could be a stress for you, with the cost of everything rising at the moment.
Here are some savvy shopper top tips to help you keep costs down:
- Set an affordable budget and stick to it
- Use online discount codes
- Look in charity shops - kids grow so fast that things rarely get worn out!
- Look for second hand items online at eBay, Vinted, Preloved, Gumtree or other selling sites (and while you're at it, why not sell some of your old items to generate some pocket money?!)
- Ask friends or family with children if they would like to do a toy swap instead of buying new gifts
- Don’t get into debt - remember, it's the thought that counts and young children don't have a concept of financial value for things. The toy you got them could have cost £5 or £100, they wouldn't know or care!
- If you exchange gifts with friends or family, why not try buying low-cost crafts or ingredients and make gifts for loved ones? Baking and decorating a big batch of Christmas biscuits and gifting them to friends and family will save money - and it's something fun to involve the kids with!

Safer sleep for your baby in the winter months
The colder months can be difficult for families, with worries about heating bills and the cost of living.
It can be tempting to wrap your baby up to keep them warm. However, overheating a baby increases the chances of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), commonly known as cot death. Research shows babies are better to be cooler rather than overheated, so please do bear that in mind.

Make sure you get enough Vitamin D in the winter
Are you and your children getting enough vitamin D? Government advice is that everyone should consider taking a vitamin D supplement at this time of year. This is especially important if you are pregnant and for young children.
Many of our Children’s Centre Service teams have vitamins available. If you qualify for Healthy Start these are free, otherwise you can buy them at low cost. Ask a member of our Children’s Centre Service team for more details.

Boost your confidence
If you struggle with your confidence, our Children’s Centre Services run an 'Opening Doors with Confidence' programme.
This is a 6-week course to help increase confidence, using a range of activities to help individuals find their own reasons for their lack of confidence.
It helps to provide strategies to make a positive change.
Contact your local Children’s Centre Service team to see if this is the right course for you.

New Year – New you
Do you feel that sometimes you experience low mood, anxiety, finding being a parent difficult, struggling to cope, social isolation and/or loneliness?
If the answer to the above is yes, have you thought about attending one of the Children’s Centre Service's Parent Health & Emotional Wellbeing (PHEW) groups?
The group offers a safe environment to talk and gain support.
Contact your local Children’s Centre Service team to see if this is the right course for your family.
