PPE use when caring for vulnerable people

At this time of year there will be higher levels of Covid-19 and other respiratory infections like flu circulating in the community. These can be very dangerous for people who are elderly or have underlying health conditions or weakened immune systems.

Wearing the correct Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while providing care can reduce the risk of spreading infection, especially when spending more time indoors in the colder weather, and also help to keep you and those you care for safe and well. Advice on the PPE you should use, and how to use it, is available on the Notts Help Yourself website.

The Department of Health and Social Care is still supplying PPE free of charge to:

Personal assistants (local authority, clinical commissioning group commissioned, funded through personal health budgets and self-funded)
Direct payment recipients
Unpaid carers who do not live with the individual they care for (including people caring for family members, if they do not live together).

You can order free PPE from the national portal by registering at the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Portal or calling the customer services team on 0800 876 6802 (Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm).

Covid jabs for over 50s - now open for booking

Everyone aged 50 and over can now book the Covid-19 booster jab. There are plenty of sites across Nottinghamshire and Nottingham, making it easier to get your immunity topped up before winter. Book at nhs.uk or call 119.

National Adoption Week

National Adoption Week (17 – 23 October) is an annual campaign organised by You Can Adopt to raise awareness of adoption across the UK.

This year, the campaign focuses on the theme of identity exploring adopted people’s memories and relationships from before, during, and after they were adopted, and how these make them who they are today.

Our Adoption East Midlands team is proud to support this campaign and is urging people to get in touch to find out more about adopting with us.

Remember your children’s vaccinations

The UK Health Security Agency is urging parents and guardians to ensure their children are up to date with all their routine childhood immunisations including polio and measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccinations. This comes as new data shows vaccination coverage for young children fell last year for virtually all programmes.

National bird flu prevention zone declared

Following an increase in the number of cases of avian influenza (bird flu) in wild birds and on commercial premises, the Chief Veterinary Officers from England, Scotland and Wales have declared an Avian Influenza Prevention Zone (AIPZ) across Great Britain to mitigate the risk of the disease spreading amongst poultry and captive birds.

This means that from midday on Monday 17 October, it was a legal requirement for all bird keepers in Great Britain to follow strict biosecurity measures to help protect their flocks from the threat of avian flu.
