A very warm welcome to our September edition of Fostering News. We hope you all had a fantastic summer and all the children in your care have enjoyed the break from school! In this edition you’ll find information about the flu vaccine for carers, the training catalogue for the rest of the year and a reminder about our foster carer referral scheme! Happy reading 😊

Foster carer referral scheme

We’ve had an amazing response to our ongoing foster carer referral scheme and lots of our foster carers have benefitted from a £250 payment for referring a friend or relative who has gone on to be approved at panel. We’ll continue to pay our foster carers for recommending our service to their friends and family. No one can recognise a brilliant potential foster carer like one of our own brilliant foster carers. You know just what it takes and whether someone has the patience, kindness and transferable skills to care for a Nottinghamshire looked after child.

Feel free to pass on our number or email address to your friends and family (and make sure you tell them to mention you’ve recommended them when they get in touch) or alternatively pass their contact details to us and we’ll make contact. The duty line number is 0115 8044440 and our email address is fostering@nottscc.gov.uk

Sons and daughters appreciation day

a picture of men and women

Our annual sons and daughters appreciation day at Holme Pierrepont on Wednesday 24 August was a huge success.

We took 20 birth children of our foster carers out for a jam-packed day of fun, featuring combat archery, crazy golf, walking the high-ropes and finally an hour out on the wipe-out lagoon. For some children it was their first time at a sons and daughter event and they didn’t know anyone there. So we are thrilled they were brave enough to join us, to see friendships being made and confidence growing throughout the day. We had so much fun and want to thank all the children and staff helpers who made it so brilliant.

We hope the children enjoyed it as much as we did.

Flu vaccination

a NHS sign

Flu is a viral illness which can be unpleasant but in otherwise healthy people will usually clear up in a week or two.  Vaccination is the most effective protection against the flu.

Many people will be eligible for a free flu vaccination through the NHS. This year these groups are eligible:

  • People aged 50 years of age or older
  • Pregnant women
  • People with underlying health conditions
  • Children aged two to year nine at school (years 10 and 11 subject to vaccine availability)
  • Frontline health and care workers

We would encourage foster carers to have a free flu vaccination if you’re eligible through the NHS flu vaccination programme.

For anyone who isn’t eligible through the NHS we’d like to offer a voucher through the County Council’s flu vaccination programme to use at participating pharmacies.

The vouchers are available through Healthy Performance and can be redeemed at a number of pharmacies including Asda, Superdrug, Sainsbury’s, Tesco and +Well.

To request a voucher for a flu vaccination go to https://www.digitalflu.co.uk/ and the code is N7C6C8.  You will need to enter your name and email address and a voucher will be sent to you on email with instructions on how to find a local pharmacy and make an appointment.  It’s really easy to do and the sooner you are vaccinated the sooner you’re protected.

For more information about flu vaccinations have a look at the NHS website or at the Nottinghamshire County Council website. If you have any questions about the flu vouchers please email: flu.vacs@nottscc.gov.uk

Become a fostering champion now!

Would you be interested in supporting the fostering recruitment team with information events, recruitment media campaigns, talking to potential foster carers and helping them with their fostering journey?

We are always looking for enthusiastic carers to join our trusty bunch of Fostering Champions. You don’t have to commit to all aspects of being a champion. you may be happy to talk to prospective carers over the phone but not want to do a local radio interview, that’s fine. We are always grateful to carers for giving whatever support they can to our ongoing fostering recruitment campaign. Carers are paid a sessional payment of £22.31 for their time, so it’s also a good way of boosting your fostering earnings.  If you think you’d be interested please email fostering@nottscc.gov.uk and we’ll be happy to discuss the scheme with you further.

Foster carer and staff conference

It’s not long until our 2022 foster carer and staff conference. Thank you to all the carers and staff who have booked their place via My Learning My Career so far. It’s not too late if you haven’t booked yours yet. Unfortunately there aren't any childcare provisions for this event so carers are encouraged to tap into their extended family and friend support networks where possible.

Follow the link to book your place now. Fostering Service Staff Conference: Foster Carer and Fostering Service Staff Conference (learningpool.com)

5 October 2022 from 9:30am  – 2:15pm at the Civic Centre, Mansfield

Training opportunities

The foster carer training catalogue for the whole year is here! You can browse the entire training programme in one place and get your training bookings in the calendar in plenty of time in order to make up your required minimum 20 hours of training a year.

Bookings are still made via My Learning My Career but this is a handy way to see all of the courses in one place. It has been uploaded to the carers website but here is a handy link -

Travel claim forms

You should have seen the recent email that went out to all carers notifying you of the need to send your claim forms to your supervising social workers, instead of sending them directly to P2P. A couple of other pointers that will help get your claim form processed more quickly include -

  • Include your Vendor number in the correct box (sometimes this is left off or put it in the reference boxes)
  • Include any bus or car park tickets you are claiming for (these are often requested if left off)
  • Include postcodes and purposes for the journeys for auditing purposes
  • Send them in regularly – about once a month minimum.

Thank you for your support with this.
