Congratulations to the children starting nursery or school!
September is often a busy month for parents and carers with lots of children starting nursery or school for the first time. This can be an exciting but emotional time for children and their parents or carers. We've put together some top tips to help parents and carers cope, and shared some useful links below.
Four top tips:
- Give yourself plenty of time in the morning before dropping off to help you and your child adapt to new routines.
- Make plans and keep busy while your child is settling in.
- Do something you enjoy and “un-parenty.”
- Remind yourself that this is another parenting stage.
Our friends at BBC Bitesize have lots of great information, including a fun game for you and your child to play together called My First Day at School – give it a go!

Start Talking Together
A fantastic resource called Start Talking Together has been developed to provide parents, carers, and practitioners with ideas to promote communication and language development with children.
Julie, who has a one-year-old son, said:
“It is really easy to use, and it gave me some good tips to support Harry’s language.”
Heather who works in a nursery said:
“I love the start talking together website. I tell lots of parents about it and find it useful in my work with children.”

Children's Centre Service UNICEF Gold Award honour
We are proud to announce that our Children’s Centre Service was recently awarded the UNICEF Baby Friendly Gold Award!
The award enables public services to better support families with feeding and forming a close and loving relationship with their baby.
In assessing the Children’s Centre Service for the award, Anne Woods, UNICEF Deputy Programme Director, praised the services on offer and the quality of evidence provided.
We are one of only two areas, where both the council’s Children’s Centre Service and the Healthcare Trust’s Community Healthy Families Service have received the Gold standard, making this award even more special.
|
Councillor Tracey Taylor, Cabinet Member for Children and Young People, said: "Meeting these standards has enabled our Children’s Centre Service workforce to support pregnant women to recognise the importance of early relationships for the health and wellbeing of their baby, to protect and support breastfeeding in all areas of the service, and to support parents to have a close and loving relationship with their baby."
Councillor Taylor is pictured with our Chairman, Councillor Roger Jackson, presenting the award to Louise Lester, who chairs Nottinghamshire’s Best Start Partnership and leads the council’s integrated children’s commissioning work.
