NHS Health Checks study day: 11 October
We’re pleased to be able to offer a study day for clinical staff who deliver NHS Health Checks in primary care. It’s the first time we’ve been able to offer training which will cover all aspects of the programme, including a step by step look at what’s involved and why it’s important.
The study day will be of interest to anyone new to delivering the programme, as well as established members of the clinical team. There will be a mixture of presentations and interactive group activities.
It will take place on Tuesday 11 October (9am to 4pm) via Zoom. Places will be allocated on a first come first served basis and will be limited to one per practice initially.
We’re hoping that we can offer more training in the future, including some for administrative staff who support the programme, as well as the clinical team.

Outreach programme
We have an NHS Health Check Outreach Programme taking place in a variety of workplaces, schools and district council offices. The sessions aim to try to reach people who would otherwise be less likely to attend an appointment at their GP surgery.
The results of these NHS Health Checks are sent to each individual’s GP for entry into their patient record and should be coded as “Provided by Third Party”.
At the first two events in May, eight out of the 24 employees seen were referred to their GP with a QRisk score of 20% or above, which shows the value of these events. If you know of any Nottinghamshire workplaces (particularly with a predominantly male, manual workforce) that might like to host one of these events, please let us know.

eHealthscope reports
We have begun to share the Missing Data Summary with all GP practices, on a monthly basis, so that you can monitor any gaps in information. The QRisk score should not be calculated until all the results have been entered and only then should the NHS Health Check be ticked as “Completed”. If any results are added or updated more than 14 days after the Health Check has been ticked as completed, this data will continue to show as incomplete on the Missing Data Summary.
Since circulating the May summary, it appears that many practices have looked into instances of missing data and the June summary is already looking a lot greener. Thank you! Please don’t hesitate to contact us or the eHealthscope Team, if you would like any help understanding these reports.

Mental Health Services
Information about mental health services can be found via the F12 Mental Health button. These include links to IAPT (Improving Access to Psychological Therapy), crisis teams, dementia, learning disabilities and self-harm/suicide prevention.
Dementia awareness
Up to 30% of dementia is attributable to risk factors including physical activity, healthy diet, alcohol intake and smoking. So, everyone who has an NHS Health Check should be made aware that the risk factors for cardiovascular disease are the same as those for dementia - “what is good for the heart is good for the brain”.
In addition, everyone aged 65-74 who has an NHS Health Check, should be told about the signs and symptoms of dementia, given a copy of the NHS Health Check dementia leaflet and be advised what to do if concerned about memory loss. If the patient requires a memory assessment, the referral must be done by a GP or hospital.
Links to online training for practitioners can be found in the NHS Health Check Training Hub.
