Do you know how to prepare for a flood?
Over 5 million homes and businesses are at risk of flooding in England. Don't assume it won't happen to you.
So, would you know what to do in a flood? One of the most valuable things to remember is the different levels of flood warning and alert and what actions you should take under each of these. These are:
- Flood alert - Prepare
- Flood warning - Act
- Severe flood warning - Survive
Did you know that some communities have what are called flood warden schemes?
Flood wardens work in partnership with us and other partner agencies and are trained to respond to an expected flood as well as making their neighbourhoods aware of emerging issues as and when they happen.
Nottinghamshire currently has 38 communities with established flood warden schemes. So, could yours be next?
We paid a visit to the community of Thurgarton to find out more about their scheme and the work they do.
If you're interested in setting up a scheme in your community, visit our volunteering page.

Keeping watercourses clear and maintained is important to manage surface water, prevent flooding and improve habitats for wildlife.
Streams, rivers, brooks, culverts and roadside ditches are all watercourses, but did you know that if you have any of these running through underneath or next to your property, it is your responsibility to look after them? This is called Riparian Ownership.
It may sound daunting to be responsible for the maintenance of a watercourse, so we've put a leaflet together explaining:
- your rights and responsibilities as a riparian owner
- what happens if you don't undertake riparian responsibilities
- changes you can make to watercourses
- common problems that can affect a watercourse.

When flooding caused a road to be washed a way, we worked alongside Via East Midlands to reconstruct the road.
This included installing new drainage systems to protect the road should the area flood in the future.
