New measures introduced in response to the Omicron variant
The Prime Minister has introduced new temporary measures which came into effect on Tuesday 30 November, to slow the arrival and spread of the Omicron variant :
- Face coverings are a legal requirement in shops and on public transport.
- International arrivals from non-red list countries who are fully vaccinated will need to isolate at home and take a PCR test on or before day two following your arrival. You are only permitted to leave isolation if this test result is negative. If your test result is positive, you will need to isolate for 10 days.
- If you have come into contact with an individual who may have been infected with the Omicron variant, you are legally required to self-isolate at home for 10 days. This applies even if you are fully vaccinated or aged 18 or under.
The Government will review these temporary measures in 3 weeks.
We know that people will be worried about new variants of Covid-19, but we can all take steps to keep ourselves and others safe.
We should continue to:
- Let fresh plenty of air in if you meet indoors. Meeting outdoors is safer.
- Keep washing your hands regularly and thoroughly
- Wear a face covering where legally required, and in crowded/enclosed spaces where you come into contact with people you do not usually meet.
- If you develop Covid-19 symptoms (even if they are mild), self-isolate immediately and get a free PCR test.
- Rapid lateral flow testing continues to be available free of charge. You can get tests from pharmacies or online. Take a rapid test on days when you’re more likely to catch or spread Covid-19. Find out more about how to get rapid lateral flow tests.
- Maximise your protection by getting vaccinated. If you’re eligible for a booster or flu vaccination, take up the offer. It’s not too late to get your first or second dose either. You can book your vaccine online or by calling 119.
Face coverings are recommended in communal areas in all education settings by staff, visitors and pupils, or students in year 7 and above unless they are exempt. In addition, pupils or students in year 7 or above should continue to wear face coverings on public and school transport unless they are exempt.
The Government has also introduced changes to isolation requirements for contacts of confirmed and suspected cases of the Omicron variant

Testing remains a vital part of our defence against Covid-19.
If you have symptoms you should get a PCR test as soon as you can, symptoms include:
- a high temperature
- a new, continuous cough
- loss of sense of smell or taste or it’s changed
If you don’t have symptoms you should continue to take lateral flow tests regularly and also on days when:
- where you will be in a high-risk situation, such as mixing with people in crowded indoor places where there is limited fresh air
- and before you visit people who are at higher risk of severe illness if they get Covid-19.

On Boost Day, 2 December, we would like to remind you to get your winter vaccines. They are the best way to protect yourself, friends and family from winter viruses so you can enjoy the festive season.
You can book your Covid-19 booster dose online if it's been 5 months (152 days) since you had your 2nd dose and you are:
- aged 40 and over
- aged 16 and over with a health condition that puts you at high risk from Covid-19
- a frontline health or social care worker.
On Monday 29 November, the Prime Minister revealed a target to offer all over 18s a booster jab by the end of January. As with first vaccine doses, the NHS will administer boosters in priority order - starting with the medically vulnerable and people over 40 before getting to younger age groups. The public are urged not to contact the NHS about their booster jab and wait to be invited.

With lots of information and updates out there at the moment about Covid-19, please keep in mind that scammers may try to take advantage of this.
That's why we're asking you to be scam aware and look out for fake NHS emails and texts asking you to order 'an Omicron PCR test'.
Remember, the NHS will NEVER ask for bank details.
