Essential winter protection
There are two essential vaccines that you may need this winter and it’s more important than ever to protect yourself and others. People in certain vulnerable groups may be eligible for both the flu jab and Covid-19 booster. If you are offered both vaccines, it’s safe to have them at the same time.
This year’s flu vaccination programme has been extended to include:
- Over 50s
- Toddlers aged 2-3*
- School children up to year 11*
- Pregnant women
- People with underlying health conditions
- Carers
- Frontline health & social care staff
*children are offered a nasal spray, but an alternative injection is available with no porcine gelatine content
People aged 18 and over can collect a box of free tests from local participating pharmacies to use at home as part of the new Pharmacy Collect service. When you visit a Pharmacy Collect site to pick up your free rapid lateral flow tests, you will now need to provide a code.
How Pharmacy Collect Code works:
- Get a code either online or by calling 119
- Take your code to the pharmacy
- Collect your tests
Remember, you’ll need a new code each time you go and collect tests.

The green, amber and red traffic light system for travel no longer applies. Instead, there is a single red list and the rest of the world. So, if you’re travelling to the UK from a non-red list country and are fully vaccinated, you only need to take a Covid-19 test on day two after you arrive.
Those travelling from red list destinations must still pay to quarantine in a hotel for ten days on arrival in England.

Vaccination is the best way to protect against the known risks of Covid-19 in pregnancy for both women and babies, including admission of the woman to intensive care and premature birth of the baby.

Wearing a face covering in crowded places such as on public transport or in a supermarket, when you're in contact with people you don't usually meet, is an easy way to keep each other safe and help stop the spread of coronavirus.

If you live in England and are aged 16 or over, you can get a Covid-19 vaccine from a walk-in vaccination site without an appointment. If you've already had your first dose, you need to wait eight weeks before having your second dose. Please remember only people aged 18 or over (or turning 18 within three months) are currently eligible for their second dose.
