Covid-19 Autumn and winter plan

Prime Minister sets out autumn winter Covid-19 plan

On Tuesday 14 September the Prime Minister announced the Government’s plan to manage Covid-19 during the autumn and winter of 2021.

A key part of the plan is building our defences through pharmaceutical interventions:

  • by maximising uptake of the vaccine for those eligible but have not yet taken up the offer
  • offering a booster jab to over 50s, front line health and social care workers, adult carers and all those aged 16 – 49 years with underlying health conditions
  • offering a first dose to children aged 12 – 15.

The Test, Trace, and Isolate system remains a vital part of the Government’s plan to manage the spread of Covid-19. Both PCR tests and rapid lateral flow tests will remain free of charge.

Plan B would be used if further measures are needed to protect the NHS, but the Government hope not to have to use it:

  • Communicating clearly and urgently to the public that the level of risk has increased, and with it the need to behave more cautiously.
  • Introducing mandatory vaccine-only COVID-status certification in certain settings.
  • Legally mandating face coverings in certain settings.

Young people aged 12 to 15 will be offered a Covid-19 vaccine

Young people vaccination

On Monday 13 September, Sajid Javid, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, announced that young people aged 12 to 15 in England would be offered a first dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine.

The NHS is now preparing to deliver a schools-based vaccination programme, which is the successful model used for vaccinations, including for HPV and Diphtheria, Tetanus and Polio (DTP), supported by GPs and community pharmacies.

Healthy school-aged children aged 12 to 15 will primarily receive their Covid-19 vaccination in their school. A guide that explains the vaccination programme for eligible children and young people is available online.

Vaccination healthcare staff will require parental, guardian or carer consent in line with existing school vaccination programmes.

Booster vaccinations confirmed for vulnerable people

Booster vaccine

The Government has announced that millions of the UK's most vulnerable will be offered a Covid-19 booster vaccine from next week.

Those eligible for a booster jab include over 50s, front line health and social care workers, adult carers, and those aged 16 – 49 years with underlying health conditions. The booster jab ensures that people most at risk of severe illness from Covid-19 will have maintained protection over the winter months.

Going to university?

Testing regularly protects us all

If you’re heading to university for the new term, advice is to take a rapid lateral flow test at home before you go. Then once you’re at university, take two more tests on site or at home. Regular testing will help keep the spread of Covid-19 under control.

If you’re not fully vaccinated you can still grab a jab to give you the best protection from Covid-19, you can find the local vaccination sites online.
