Welcome to the April edition of Fostering News. We hope you have had a lovely Easter weekend – we have some ideas for enjoying the remainder of the school holidays and information on some great upcoming training.

FLAG reminder

Our first online FLAG meeting will be on Monday 26 April at 7pm. Please email fostering@nottscc.gov.uk if you are able to attend and the recruitment team will share the Microsoft Teams link with you to enable you to join the video call.

We are beginning to think about our next foster carer conference and we will be discussing ideas at the next FLAG meeting, so please bring any ideas you have – we’d really like to have your thoughts on how we can make it even better than the last!

School holiday activities

In Nottinghamshire, we are so lucky to have so many beautiful country parks to enjoy. There are some fantastic Easter trails on over the Easter school holidays and you can find further details on the school holidays events page.

Although the trails don’t need booking in advance, some of the car parks get very busy so it’s always worth booking a space to avoid disappointment.

The Achievement Service

graduation

The Achievement Service has been re-launched to support our 16-17-year old children in care and 18–24-year-old care leavers in Nottinghamshire.

We want our young people to be the best they can be, and so the aim is to help young people to aspire and achieve in whatever career path they choose to take. Whether that’s through education and studying in college, going to university, doing an apprenticeship, on-the-job training or succeeding in the world of work.

The Achievement Service is committed to helping our young people make the most of every opportunity and can offer support, advice and guidance from their 16th until their 25th birthday and as part of this, they have developed their Achievement Offer by linking with our partners, organisations and industry professionals including the REED employment agency, Chamber of Commerce, Nottingham Trent University, Futures, DWP, Kickstart, Broxtowe Youth Homelessness and many, many more to develop an offer similar to the Local Offer for Care Leavers to ensure that all our young people have as many opportunities as possible to explore their learning and career path on their way into the world of work.

The Achievement Offer will be launched at the end of this month and will be available via the Notts Help Yourself Website and Notts Next Steps App (for smart devices) or for more information contact achievement@nottscc.gov.uk

University support for our looked after young people

Do you have a young person in place who is thinking of going to university this year?

Kathryn and Teresa  would like to invite you to their digital event for professionals working with care experienced students. The event will take place on 27 May, 10am-12.15pm, and they will provide you with key information and updates needed for you to support any care experienced young person who is considering attending university.

There will also be an opportunity to hear from current students about their experiences. We appreciate that you may not be able to attend the session ‘live’ and so we will provide a recording of the session along with some resources we think are useful to those supporting future university students on request.

Kathryn Gardiner (Transition Coordinator at Nottingham Trent University)

Teresa Flowers (Access and Participation Manager at The University of Nottingham)

Give your thoughts on what you would like to hear during the session and to register your interest in attending or receiving a recording:
