Watercourses leaflet

Do you have a watercourse near your property?

Keeping watercourses clear and maintained is important to manage surface water, prevent flooding and improve habitats for wildlife.

Streams, rivers, brooks, culverts and roadside ditches are all watercourses, but did you know that if you have any of these running through underneath or next to your property, it is your responsibility to look after them? This is called Riparian Ownership.

It may sound daunting to be responsible for the maintenance of a watercourse, so we've put a leaflet together explaining:

  • your rights and responsibilities as a riparian owner
  • what happens if you don't undertake riparian responsibilities
  • changes you can make to watercourses
  • common problems that can affect a watercourse.

Prepare, Act, Survive

Do you know how to prepare for a flood?

Do you know your flood alerts from your flood warnings and your flood preparations from your actions to take during a flood?

It can be difficult to know what to do if a flood alert or warning is put in place for your area, but it doesn't have to be. Following the prepare, act, survive advice is your guide to what to do should a flood occur and how to keep yourself and your property safe.

There's so much to think about when it comes to preparing for a flood, including insurance, sandbags and knowing your responsibilities as a riparian owner, so we've put all of this together in one place on our 'preparing for a flood page.'

Bespoke measures to protect homes from flooding

Construction person working on flooding schemes

We are investing £1million in property flood resilience (PFR) measures to protect communities most vulnerable to flooding. But what is PFR?

Put simply, PFR is a scheme using bespoke measures for each property to protect them from flooding. This could include flood resilient doors, self-sealing air bricks, non-return valves in plumbing systems, repointing damaged or missing mortar or applying external waterproofing to ground floor walls.

More than 100 properties in Southwell have benefited from PFR, and now further areas across Nottinghamshire have been identified for these measures, which include: Jacksdale, Cropwell Butler, Bramcote, Tollerton, East Markham and Linby.

The tender process for the scheme has been completed with works scheduled for completion in July 2021. We will keep you updated on the progress of the scheme in future flooding bulletins.
