Flood aware

Amber weather warning for rain across Nottinghamshire

You may have heard that heavy rain is expected across the county as Storm Cristoph arrives in the UK, but did you know that there's also a number of flood alerts in place?

Knowing the flood risk of your area and being aware of any alerts or warnings in place is the first step to preparing yourself for flooding, so if you haven't had a look already, why not find out the flood forecast for your area?

Remember that alerts and warnings are likely to change, so for the latest updates on flooding in Nottinghamshire, make sure you're following us on social media.

Preparing for a flood

Flood warnings

Now that you've checked whether there's any flood alerts or warnings in place for your area, you can move on to the next stage of being prepared. This includes:

Making a personal flood plan - a bag of essentials you would need if you had to leave home, such as medications and insurance documents

Preparing your property - in the event of a flood, would you know how to turn off things like gas, water and electricity? Knowing this now will save you time should a flood occur.

Your property has flooded, but what should you do?

The first thing to remember is that your safety and that of your family is the main priority, and you should always listen to the advice of emergency services.

It's also a good idea to keep up-to-date with local news bulletins giving updates, and to have a read of the advice on our 'during a flood' page.

Remember, if life is in danger, call 999.

Driving through flood water can have dangerous consequences. You cannot always be sure how deep the water is, and did you know that just 30cm of flowing water is enough to move your car?

It's best to find an alternative route should you come across a flooded road, and we cannot stress enough that you should never ignore flood warning and road closed signs.
