Welcome to the September edition of Fostering News. We have a great website to share with you if you have a teenager in your care who might be struggling with their self-esteem and some exciting news about Virtual Reality Headsets which the Service is now able to share with you all!

Help shape the future of mental health support for young people

In Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, services are commissioned to provide early support and intervention for mental health and emotional wellbeing to children and young people, aged up to 25 years, as well as training for professionals.

The NHS Clinical Commissioning Group responsible for this area would like your views, as well as those of the young people you care for, to help them better understand what the support has been like at the early intervention stage for anyone who has accessed it. These insights will help to shape the future of the mental health and early intervention and prevention pathway for children and young people.

If you would like to take part in the survey, please note that it is open until 18 September.

Notts Next Steps app

Notts Next Steps

If you care for a young person aged 17 or 18, they could benefit from the ‘Next Steps’ app, designed to keep care leavers up-to-date with important information. The app offers advice and guidance around Nottinghamshire’s Local Officer as well as information on the kinds of services and support available to them.

The Leaving Care Team has been working hard on the app, which will soon feature weekly updates on any new opportunities, including apprenticeships and CSCS card training.

Virtual Reality headsets to offer insight to foster carers

VR headset

Virtual Reality headsets are now available to support foster care training. The case scenarios on offer give an insight into trauma and abuse through the eyes of a child.

The scenarios include pre-birth experiences and those that will help to understand the impact that abuse and neglect has on children. Other scenarios focus on carer responses and provide helpful examples of how best to support children. If you could like to find out more about Virtual Reality headsets, please speak to your supervising social worker.

Helping teenagers with self-steem and body image

We all know how difficult it can be to be a teenager these days, but have you thought about the impact that social media could be having on body image? A tap of a smartphone screen is all it takes to access apps like Instagram, where many teens upload photos of themselves and scrutinise the way they look compared to social media ‘influencers.’

What teenagers may not know is that these pictures are often taken using high-tech lighting before being edited with filters to enhance them. If you have a teenager in your care, how about reading this guide to supporting young people with their self-esteem and body image?
