Welcome to our special celebratory edition of Fostering News to coincide with Foster Care Fortnight and to thank our carers for all their hard work during the coronavirus lockdown.

Foster Care Fortnight

FCF

Foster Care Fortnight™ is the UK’s biggest foster care awareness raising campaign, delivered by leading fostering charity, The Fostering Network. Established in 1997, the campaign showcases the commitment, passion and dedication of foster carers. It also supports fostering services to highlight fostering in their local area and the fantastically positive impact fostering is making to the lives of children and young people.

Lockdown low-down

We want to say thank you to all our amazing carers for rising to the challenge of lockdown life so wonderfully and keeping our looked after children safe.

It’s fair to say that this has been one of the toughest periods in history for our foster carers and their families.

We have all had to reassure our children that things will be okay whilst at the same time battling with our own anxieties and worries about the people we love during the virus outbreak. We’ve never experienced this kind of “ground hog day” scenario before, where you wake up and wonder how you’re going to fill the next 12/14/16 hours (depending on the ages of your children!) so that it isn’t exactly the same as the day before. All the puzzles have been completed, the craft kits have now been made and Disney + has been a life saver!

The beautiful rainbows we’ve seen in windows while we’ve been out for our daily exercise have reminded us that we are not alone. In all of those houses are families just like ours, staying at home to keep safe and finding different ways to fill the day.

Home schooling is not something we ever imagined would be added to our list of daily tasks. We are not teachers; we are parents and foster carers. We are doing our best and that’s all anyone can ask!

Around the county - you've all been very busy! 😍

You’ve all been so busy - it’s been really inspiring to hear what you’ve been up to over the past few weeks.

Here's a snippet of what you've all been doing!

🎤 Kirsty’s family in the North has put together a family choir and we hope they will consider entering Fostering’s Got Talent when we’re able to hold our next event!

🎖️ Some beautiful VE Day bunting and hand print paintings from the Barker's are included in the photo collage above.

💀 One foster family has made and decorated some beautiful chocolate skulls which are so unusual and creative!

😷 Shelley and Lyn in the South have been putting their crocheting skills to good use by making some ear protector headbands for the NHS staff to make their facemasks more comfortable.

🚲 We’ve also heard some really uplifting stories about children learning to ride their bikes without stabilisers, baking cakes to share with doctors, nurses and other key workers in their areas, and two young people with Rachel and Glen in the North who are smashing their Health and Social Care studies in order to fulfil their aspirations of becoming social workers themselves one day.

So, once again, a big thank you from everyone in the fostering service. We will be sending out the regular June edition of Fostering News in a couple of weeks and we’d love to receive any more pictures of the children’s home projects that we can include. Please send them to fostering@nottscc.gov.uk

Bye for now!
