As your local county council, we are your Lead Local Flood Authority responsible for managing flood risk in Nottinghamshire.

We work alongside partners to manage flooding from local sources, such as surface water and watercourses, and we are responsible for developing and applying a strategy for local food risk management across the county.

Floods - flooded road

When flooding hits, it can be devastating to residents and businesses, and that's what happened in November 2019 when communities across Nottinghamshire were flooded.

Those worst affected were in Worksop, Shireoaks, Retford and Egmanton, and the Council’s flood risk management and emergency planning teams, together with Via East Midlands facilitated 66 road closures and placed over 750 flood signs to warn motorists,

Over 5,000 sandbags were delivered to help to protect communities and rest centres housed those evacuated from their homes.

The impacts of flooding are still felt after flood waters have receded, and to date, £120,000 has been paid out from the Nottinghamshire County Council Flooding Hardship fund to support those most affected.

Reducing flood risk in Hucknall

Residents in Hucknall are set to benefit from over £900k of investment to protect homes from flooding.

The area around Titchfield Park brook will be the focus of a flood risk management scheme delivered by Nottinghamshire County Council alongside Ashfield District Council and Via East Midlands.

The project will see the realignment of the existing brook from the boundary to the middle of the park and the creation of grassed meadows and basins to form surface water storage areas during heavy rainfall and storms.

A first for Nottinghamshire as 'super gullies' are installed

Super gullies

The Southwell Flood Risk Management project has seen a first for Nottinghamshire as five ‘super gullies’ have been installed.

Super gullies can be up to nine times more effective than those normally installed and help with clearing uncontrolled surface water.

The works are part of a larger flood risk management project in the area, which also includes property flood resilience, engineering solutions and sustainable urban drainage systems.

The super gullies have been installed over an eight-week period on Halam Road by digging down into the road before concrete is poured in and the gully is then inserted.

These innovative gullies were chosen as part of the scheme due to their low maintenance approach to managing flood risk.

Large pipes have formed part of the installation which will direct surface water into a nearby pond instead of onto surrounding estates.
