We hope you enjoy this first edition of the Your Life email bulletin. These emails are aimed at Nottinghamshire residents who are semi-retired or retired and want to get the most out of life. We’ll be featuring information on useful services along with practical tips to keep fit and healthy.

Notts Help Yourself

All the information you need: www.nottshelpyourself.org.uk

If you’ve ever struggled to find information, stumbled upon things by chance or been overwhelmed by knowing where to start looking - try nottshelpyourself.org.uk. This revamped website is designed to help people find information about a whole range of organisations and services including:

  • activities, groups and events in your local community
  • childcare providers
  • support for children and young people aged 0 – 25 with a special educational need and / or a disability
  • health and social care information and support for adults and children.

The website is compatible with smart phones or tablets, so you can find information when you are on the move.

Shared Lives

Could you be a Shared Lives carer?

If you are a caring and patient person and have room in your home, you may be interested in training to become a Shared Lives carer.

Our Shared Lives service helps people who are older, disabled or have mental health needs by matching them with trained carers who open up their homes and lives to support them. We are trying to recruit 30 more carers across Nottinghamshire, particularly people who can provide long term support.

The role would particularly suit someone who has space in their home and either has spare time or is considering a change of career. Find out more about Shared Lives and hear the stories of two of our carers: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/sharedlives or phone 0300 500 80 80.

Coffee and Cake

Coffee and cake

A second café in Rushcliffe is teaming up with the County Council to offer coffee and cake sessions for older people to help reduce loneliness.

No. 29 on Station Terrace in Radcliffe on Trent is holding drop-in sessions for older people every Wednesday from 12 – 2pm. Sessions have also been running every Wednesday (2 – 4pm) at Costa in West Bridgford.

The Council is aiming to work with other cafés across the county to set up similar sessions for older people to meet up. If you know of a café that is interested in working with the Council contact us on 0115 977 4116.

Making life easier for carers

If you look after someone, you can now complete an online form which assesses the support you need as a carer. This means that you can provide information when it is convenient to you, rather than having to make an appointment with a social worker. Find out more: http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/latest-news/making-life-easier-for-carers

A series of events for carers will also be held across Nottinghamshire between May and September. The events, which have been set up by carers themselves, are being run by the Nottinghamshire Carers Hub and funded by the County Council and health service. Information will be available about support groups, services and funding for carers. For a full list of dates and locations visit: http://www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/care/adult-social-care/carers/support-for-carers

The Nottinghamshire Digital Champions Network is a new initiative to create and support a team of Digital Champions across the county who can help both residents and businesses get online.

Interested in volunteering?

If you’re coming up to retirement and are wondering how to fill your time, why not consider volunteering in your local area?

If you would like to find out what’s available in your area, visit www.nottshelpyourself.org.uk and search for ‘volunteering’. You can filter the results by the area you live.
