Are you Bin Smart? Coming soon to a lamppost near you
Look out for the lamppost banners popping up across the county reminding everyone to put all of their empty plastic bottles in their recycling bin. In the UK only 58% of plastic bottles are currently being recycled which means that far too many bottles are missing out on being recycled into new things. You can easily help by simply popping off the tops and then putting all of your drinks, sauce, shampoo, hand wash and cleaning bottles etc into your recycling bin.

If you spot a lamppost banner, why not tweet us a pic with the hashtag #RecycleForNotts?

Find out how you can help increase Nottinghamshire’s recycling rate by becoming ‘BinSmart’.

Get composting with your falling leaves
Fallen leaves make great leaf mould if gathered and either piled up in a corner of your garden or put into a black bag to decompose. It takes about a year but the end product can be used as a potting mix for your seeds or as a mulch. There’s plenty of other garden waste that can still be added to your compost bin such as spent bedding plants, grass cuttings from your final mow of the lawn, autumn leaves and prunings. These can all be recycled over the coming months to produce nutritious compost ready for use in the garden next spring.

The secret to really good compost is having a range of ingredients in your mix. In addition to garden waste, you can also add in other materials such as fruit and vegetable peelings, coffee grounds, tea bags, tissues, cardboard egg boxes, newspaper and shredded paper.

Don’t have a compost bin? Order one here.

Decorate your own tote bag - a reuse and recycling visit and Materials Recycling Facility Tour
With the introduction of the 5p charge for plastic bags in major shops and supermarkets, one solution to avoid the charge and reduce waste is to take reusable bags with you when shopping. To add that personal touch to your reusable bag, why not book a place on one of our free tours at the Materials Recovery facility in Mansfield?

Not only will you be able to decorate your own reusable bag that you’ll be able to use again and again, but you’ll also be able to see how your recyclables get sorted before being baled up and taken to reprocessors to be recycled into new things. Tours are open to groups and school pupils aged seven and above.

If you would like find out more or arrange a visit please contact us.
