Builders, carpenters, electricians, joiners, plasterers, plumbers, and roofers are just some of the trades being urged to take the risks of asbestos seriously.
That’s the message from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE). The workplace regulator has launched a new campaign to raise awareness of the risks associated with the dangerous substance.
Asbestos was banned in the UK in 1999 but it didn’t disappear. It remains in places that you might not expect, and this means that people working in a number of trades are at increased risk of disturbing asbestos.
If asbestos fibres are inhaled, they can cause serious disease. Construction tradespeople of any age are at significant risk if they disturb materials containing asbestos during repairs and refurbishment.

On Saturday April 12, an Easter Garden can be found in Sleaford's Market Place offering fun for all the family, including craft activities and seasonal selfie spots.
Alongside the garden will be an Easter window trail, where 10 businesses will display a bunny window sticker with a unique letter. Visitors must find all the stickers and unscramble the letters to reveal the password to gain entry to the garden, receive a Cadbury Easter egg (while stocks last) and be entered into a prize draw to win a Nintendo Switch.
The event aims to drive footfall to businesses and bring new visitors into the town centre to discover all that Sleaford has to offer, which in turn could encourage them to explore more of North Kesteven. It's been funded by the Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
