National Gardening Week 2021

Family gardening

There's a bank holiday weekend on the horizon, and with April 27 - May 2 being National Gardening Week, why not kick-start the long weekend by ticking off some gardening jobs for May

Run by the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), the week aims to raise awareness of gardening and horticulture, and to encourage more people to take part in the healthy and productive outdoor activity of gardening.

Managing stress

Woman feeling stressed out

Stress is something we all feel, at least from time to time. So let's take the time to learn what stress is and find ways to reduce it. Stress can be important in certain situations and can even help us to be more productive, but constant or chronic stress can have a negative impact on our bodies. If stress is taking its toll on you lately, take a look at these tips from the NHS:

Getting your motivation back

We know that moving our bodies is good for us. Recent studies have even shown that children who spend a lot of time sitting are more likely to become depressed.

Luckily for us, there are so many ways to get active, and all sorts of exercise counts.

The easing of lockdown restrictions means that outdoor sports courts can now reopen, with indoor exercise classes hopefully re-opening next month.

If you're still struggling to get moving, then here are some tips to help:

  • Keep it simple. For your first session back try not to make your workout too complicated.
  • Don’t put too much pressure on yourself – you may have lost some fitness or strength & that is to be expected, but you can build this back up
  • Be realistic about your routine & be flexible – will you be going back to work around this time & have other changes to your routine? Don’t give yourself too much to do. Prioritise & plan your week to fit in your workouts.
  • Have some friendly competition or someone to be accountable too. If you’re nervous about heading back why not go with a friend. That way you are less likely to talk yourself out of going but also a friendly face when you get there can really help.
  • Exercise isn’t just about how you look! There are so many studies about the positive impact on your mental wellbeing of exercise & this is arguably more important that the physical benefits, especially after a year of being stuck indoors.
  • Try something new. Keeping motivated under “normal” circumstances can be a challenge but, again, after the last 12 months it could be even tricker. Take this as a really good opportunity to try something new & change your routine. So, have you been doing more Yoga over lockdown? This can really support strength & cardio workouts so keep that up, especially if you have enjoyed it.
  • Reward yourself! This doesn’t necessarily mean by eating a massive cake after a workout – although there is no judgement here if you do! But do give yourself a pat on the back & acknowledge the work you have just done.

Love where you live

One of our team was out and about in North Devon at the weekend and took some photos of the beautiful, rugged coastline between Morte Point and Bull Point which we thought would be nice to share with you. We hope you like them.
