We've joined forces with partners across the South West to warn would-be tourists, second home owners and visitors to the region to 'think twice' about coming.
This guidance is for people planning to visit second homes or holiday premises during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
Essential travel does not include visits to second homes, camp sites, caravan parks or similar, whether for isolation purposes or holidays. People must remain in their primary residence. Not taking these steps puts additional pressure on communities and services that are already at risk.
People with holiday homes and caravans are still not permitted to travel to their second home or to stay overnight. Leaving your home - the place you live - to stay at another home is not allowed. https://www.gov.uk/.../covid-19-essential-travel-guidance
Don't forget, charging in the NDC car parks in Ilfracombe, Hele, Croyde and Mortehoe begins again this weekend but we're not taking cash to reduce the risk of transmission of Coronavirus.
If you want to pay by card, the good news is that we have removed the £3.30 minimum charge for card payments but you will have to press a button on the machine, so make sure you have some hand sanitiser with you if you use this method.
The easiest and safest way to pay is via RingGo. Watch this short video about how RingGo works: myringgo.co.uk/howitworks
The advantages are:
- you don't have to touch the machines at all - you can top up your parking without returning to the vehicle - if you're worried about mobile reception, you can book it from home in advance - you can pay over the phone, on the smartphone app, on your computer or tablet or using the 'text me' service.
Here is a link to a video on how to use Ringo:
As Monday 25 May is a bank holiday, your waste and recycling collections will be made one day later than usual. Don't forget to put your bins, bags and boxes out by 7am in case your collection time is earlier than usual.
The Museum of Barnstaple and North Devon are appealing for help from the public to document the affect of the pandemic in the district.
The arrival of the Covid-19 pandemic has brought huge change to the daily lives of individuals and communities across North Devon.
They would welcome your stories about adapting to lockdown life, care and support in the community, keyworker experiences or creative responses to the pandemic. However small, your story will help to build a bigger picture of how our community managed, reflected and shared their experiences during lockdown.
Lastly although the museum is passionate about documenting local history, our number one priority is the health and well-being of our community. They are urging people not to breach government guidelines regarding contributions and ask that you show sensitivity and compassion with your submissions.
To submit your story and/or photographs visit their special webpage.
A reminder that all North Devon Council run play areas will remain shut for the forseeable future. This includes the skateparks in Ilfracombe and Barnstaple and the BMX pump track at Velator.
As play areas are closed, they are also not subject to the usual regular safety inspections, so the equipment may not be safe to play on.
This decision has been made for YOUR safety, please do not disregard the closed signs or climb over locked gates to access the play areas.
As the country begins the slow process of returning to ‘normality’ businesses are being told to flush out the water supply in their buildings before they reopen, in order to prevent spreading the Legionella bacteria.
Premises are also required to undertake a detailed review of all aspects of their water management system before reopening. For more information please visit: https://bit.ly/3bTGONi
DIT is developing a programme of work to support UK’s technology and agriculture and food and drink sector’s recovery post COVID-19.
They are looking for support input from people working in these industries from across the South West region to help shape their response.
They would be very grateful if people could complete one or both of their short surveys by Tuesday 26 May.

In just 20 minutes, a dog could die in a hot car. Winding down a window is not enough. NEVER leave your dog in a warm car 🚗
Think twice about any car trips with your dog - avoid congested roads or busy times of day when they could overheat in the car if you are caught up in traffic. If driving with your dog plan your journey considering cooler times of the day and places to take breaks.
If you see a dog in distress in a hot car, call 999 immediately
Do you or anyone you know need help getting to medical appointments? We can organise this for you through our community hub. We are using the wonderful Driving Miss Daisy to provide this free, local authority funded service. Call our helpline on 01271 388280 or fill in our online form: my.northdevon.gov.uk/service/Request_for_assistance.
We are asking members of the public to ‘shout out’ their community heroes.
This campaign aims to recognise members of the community who have gone the extra mile.
If you’re interested then please visit www.dc.police.uk/COVID19ShoutOut to download and print the nomination form. This gives you enough space to write about or draw your hero! Why not get the little ones involved?
After you’ve finished your master piece, share on social media using the hashtag #COVID19ShoutOut and we will repost our favourites!
