A variation to the existing plans for a new BMX track at Velator got the go ahead at a meeting of North Devon Council Planning Committee on Wednesday 11 September.

Local contractors, TK Play have been working in partnership with Kye Forte of Forte Trailscapes to design and build a pump track following a public consultation in 2018, which showed overwhelming support for the facility, with 84% of those responding in favour.

The £100k project has been funded jointly by £75k from North Devon Council’s *S106 funding and £25k from Devon County Council’s investing in Devon Fund.

Leader of North Devon Council, Councillor David Worden says: “It’s very exciting that work is about to start on this project. Both Forte Trailscapes and TK Play bring a wealth of experience, in their relevant fields, to the project. So I am confident they have designed an amazing track that BMX riders will really enjoy using.”

The Leader of Devon County Council Councillor John Hart says: “This is an excellent project and exactly the kind of scheme the sale of Exeter Airport was intended to support. The Investing in Devon Fund enables the county council to help respond to local needs as they arise to benefit communities. Once completed I am sure the track will be well used.”

Work will start on the site on 30 September and the construction period will last around six weeks.

*Section 106 (S106) is money paid to the council by developers as part of the planning conditions of planning applications. The money can only be used for certain things, but is used primarily for public open space projects.
