Good afternoon,
Welcome to this week's edition of News Direct, bringing you the latest news and events across North Lincolnshire.
It has been a busy and challenging week and my thoughts remain with the 260 Scunthorpe steelworkers whose jobs are at risk.
Our immediate priority is supporting these workers and their families - as soon as we heard the news we mobilised a taskforce to help these skilled and talented people back into the labour market as quickly as possible.
As well as this, I am pleased to share breaking news we've received from Government, who have confirmed plans to dramatically cut energy costs for strategic businesses - including British Steel. This will go a long way to supporting these companies to be competitive on the global stage and help to secure a sustainable future for energy intensive industries.
You can read more about this and other stories below - including great news that building work is set to start on the £3.5m Epworth Hub. This will be of huge benefit to local people, bringing together facilities in one convenient location.
Thanks for reading,

Council leader welcomes Government’s ‘supercharger’ plans for steel industry
Hundreds of businesses across the UK – including British Steel – are set to benefit from reductions in energy costs under a proposed new Government scheme.
The move – designed to support competitiveness and decarbonisation of energy intensive industries – has been welcomed by Cllr Rob Waltham, leader of North Lincolnshire Council.
He said: "There is an immediate need to support the workers potentially affected by the recent announcement from British Steel but these measures should give greater certainty and sustainability to energy intensive industry.”

Epworth set for new community hub as £3.5m cash confirmed
Building work is set to begin on a new community hub in the Isle of Axholme, providing families with convenient access to essential services in the heart of Epworth.
Cllr Rob Waltham, leader, North Lincolnshire Council, said: “It’s great to see work begin on this new community hub. People have said they want access to key services in locations central to them and we have listened. This investment is all about bringing together support and facilities under one roof and locating them at the heart of the community."

Be the 1,000th composting hero – switch your brown bin for a FREE composter
Nearly 1,000 people have already made the switch from brown bins to home composters as part of the council’s Grow Don’t Throw scheme.
With spring just around the corner now is the ideal time to join the hundreds of others who have started composting.
A key part of the council's Our Green Future strategy, composting minimises waste which would otherwise go to landfill and release harmful methane emissions.

Can you provide vital support to children and families by becoming a Short Breaks + foster carer?
New foster carers are needed across North Lincolnshire to help provide short breaks for children and young people.
Short Breaks + supports parents and carers by offering short breaks from their often-demanding 24/7 responsibilities. This might include an overnight stay, or longer periods of time during school holidays.
One current Short Breaks + foster carer, said, “Being a Short Breaks + foster carer is incredibly fulfilling and enables me to give extra support to the family. I would absolutely encourage anyone to foster and providing short breaks introduces you to the fostering role."
