WOW! Said the Owl

10 October 2020 – 30 January 2021

WOW! Said the Owl is a family friendly and very interactive exhibition which will be on show at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre through the autumn, the Christmas period and into the New Year. Based on the much-loved children’s book, by Tim Hopgood, the show has been specially designed to appeal to families and especially under five-year olds, with lots of bright, colourful sensory and playful elements.

The exhibition seeks to give children the same sense of wonder and amazement as the owl in the story who stays up all day, by introducing them to colours and inviting them to be creative by enjoying interactive elements of the show.

Because of Covid 19, the number of interactives in the exhibition has been reduced, however there's still plenty to do. As only one group/bubble of up to six people will be allowed into the exhibition area at a time you'll have room to explore those interactives with your children without worrying about social distancing. We want to ensure that you have a safe and enjoyable experience, so we ask that everyone plays their part and follows the procedures, looks after their children and is respectful of other families and staff members.

If you are a nursery or playgroup leader and would like to find out about free under 5’s workshop opportunities and group visits, contact laura.higgins@northlincs.gov.uk or 01724 296039 to find out more.

WOW! Said the Owl is a touring exhibition for under-fives and their families, designed by Tim Hopgood and organised by The Young Art Explorers Association, with thanks to Arts Council England and Macmillan Children’s Books.

Getting creative with WOW! Said the Owl

ARTivities are back in the gallery for this exhibition, with a limited number of socially distanced activity tables where visitors can get creative with makes that will change throughout the exhibition. We’ll also be asking visitors to decorate large butterflies which will become part of the show. Take away packs of activities will also be available with lots of ideas for things to do at home linked to the theme of the exhibition.

Watch out too for news of a live online owl themed workshop with studio potter Karen Raithby to take place on 14 November. Book on to reserve your place, pick up a box of materials in advance, log on to join in on the day, then return your creations to 20-21 to be fired for you.

Ted Lewis – Get Carter 50th Anniversary Exhibition

19 September 2020 – 9 January 2021

When our call went out in August for artists to re-imagine the cover of the iconic crime novel Get Carter, we had no idea that we’d receive such a wide range of submissions in response. Twenty five artists answered the call, with book covers incorporating everything from Playmobil to typewriter art.

Barton-upon-Humber author, artist, illustrator and musician Ted Lewis is best known for creating the character Jack Carter, the protagonist in the 1971 cult film Get Carter, starring Michael Caine. Originally published in 1970 as Jack’s Return the book was soon reissued under the same title as the film adaptation. It’s generally considered to be the classic modern crime novel.

Our exhibition of art inspired by Ted Lewis and his work also included a selection of first editions of his novels, on loan from the archives collection of North Lincolnshire Library and lots of information about this local author.

This could be anything from a quick idea, to a voice note about what you would like to get out of the festival, to a bit of text about why you think representation is important.

Submit your thoughts via email to northlincsfestival@gmail.com. The deadline for taking part is Thursday 22nd October at 5pm.
