It’s important to stay protected against a drop in temperature as cold weather can affect your body’s ability to fight off viruses and infections. By keeping warm, you can help yourself stay well this winter.
Those more at risk of illness in winter
You're at greater risk of illness in cold weather if you:
• are aged over 65 • are on a low income (and find heating difficult to afford) • have a long-term health condition such as heart, lung or kidney disease • have a disability

Now we are in the flu season it is time to think about having the flu vaccination to protect yourself and others against a virus that can cause severe illness.
The flu vaccine is offered free on the NHS for people who are at risk.
Staff working with elderly or vulnerable people should also get the flu vaccine to protect themselves, family, friends and the people they work with. Don’t delay – you need to get the vaccination every year. Find out more.
There is also a vaccine to protect you from the pain of shingles.
People aged between 70 and 79 years, inclusive, are eligible to have the shingles vaccine. They should contact their GP practice to discuss and arrange an appointment to have the vaccine. The older you are the more likely you are to have long lasting pain. Most people fully recover, but for some the pain can last months or even years. Around 1,400 people over the age of 70 are admitted to hospital because of shingles.

We are looking for volunteers to give just a little of their time to help other parents in their communities or support children to read in school.
Parent Champions are ordinary parents like you who want to give back to their community or improve their own skills and confidence. They speak to other parents they meet at the school gate, birthday parties or toddler groups about the many options available to help parents with the costs of childcare, or support services for families, which they may not be aware of.
The role can fit easily around your children or work and need not always take up any extra time in your busy lives. We simply give you the training you will need to have these conversations with other parents as and when they come up in your daily activities.
The next volunteer training session will take place on Monday 4 November 2019,10am to 2pm at The Arc Westcliff, Lichfield Avenue, Scunthorpe.
For more information and an application form, even if you are unable to attend on 4 November, please email fis@northlincs.gov.uk or call 01724 296629.
Or what about becoming a Reading Champion?
Reading Champions go into schools to listen to children read and encourage a love of books and reading. Contact us on 01724 296668 or email wordscount@northlincs.gov.uk for more information.

World Diabetes Day is on 14 November this and every year. It’s a day when millions of people around the world come together to raise awareness of diabetes.
Adults with diabetes are nearly twice as likely to die from heart disease or stroke as people without diabetes. This is because over time, high blood glucose from diabetes can damage your blood vessels and the nerves that control your heart. The good news is there are steps you can take to manage your diabetes and lower your chances of having heart disease or a stroke, such as:
- Stop smoking
- Manage your blood pressure and cholesterol levels
- Develop or maintain healthy lifestyle habits
- Be physically active
- Manage stress
Read more about living with diabetes on the NHS website.

The first Wednesday in November each year is National Stress Awareness Day, this year it falls on 6 November. Many of us know what it’s like to feel stressed – being under pressure is a normal part of life. But becoming overwhelmed by stress can lead to mental health problems or make existing problems worse. National Stress Awareness Day is a great opportunity to take a moment to think about our well being and find advice or support on managing stress.
You may not realise if you are feeling stressed, you may have just started to notice some different mental and physical symptoms. Stress can’t always be prevented, but there are lots of things you can do to help. The Mental Health Foundation website is also a good source of information and advice.
