North Lincolnshire Council is urging residents to keep warm and well this winter, and look after their health – especially those most at risk, as the cold weather and freezing temperatures set in.
Cold winter weather can be harmful to health, not just by increasing the risk of getting colds, coughs and flu but by weakening the body’s ability to fight off viruses and infections, and increasing risks of high blood pressure, heart disease, strokes and chest infections.
Older people aged 65 and over, and those with a long-term health conditions including heart disease, respiratory conditions and diabetes are particularly vulnerable to winter illnesses.
If you are aware of a neighbour, friend, or relative who is over 65 or has a long-term condition, and may find it difficult to get out, check that they are warm, well and their medicine cabinet and food supplies are stocked up. Having some company may also reduce social isolation.
You can find advice on looking after your health and keeping warm on the winter health page. To find out more about support and activities for older adults, visit the Adult Information Hub website.

Share your views on the stroke and dementia services that are currently provided in North Lincolnshire to help identify if changes need to be made in the future.
Supporting people and their carers who live with dementia and stroke is a priority for North Lincolnshire Council to enable people to be independent and live well with their conditions.
The Alzheimer’s Society and The Stroke Association are currently commissioned by the council to provide information, guidance and support to local people living with dementia and the impact of stroke.
Both of these services are being reviewed to make sure the right service is being delivered at the right time by the right people.
To help us with this, we want to hear from:
- Anyone who has had a stroke or has a diagnosis of dementia
- Carers who look after people who have had a stroke or a diagnosis of dementia
- Anyone who has used the information, guidance and support services from The Stroke Association or The Alzheimer’s Society (including people with long term conditions, their family members or carers)
- Stakeholders who provide services to people with dementia/stroke
Your views will help shape these services in the future to ensure they meet the needs of people using them.
It will only take a few minutes of your time to complete the survey and will make a real difference.
To have your say by completing the survey, click on
Survey closes 21 January 2019.

In North Lincolnshire, there is a real need for brothers and sisters to be adopted so they can stay together as a family. Do you think you could provide a loving home for a sibling group?
Not only are we looking for adoptive parents who can adopt siblings, we welcome interest from potential adopters who can provide a home for children of all ages and a single child.
There is no such thing as a ‘typical’ adopter and we celebrate people who have different experiences and different things to offer. No child is the same which is why we are searching for adopters who can consider children of different ages and with different needs.
You don’t have to live in North Lincolnshire to adopt with us. Whether you are single, married, gay, renting your home or don’t have your own children, we would love to hear from you.
If adoption isn’t for you, do you know someone who would make a fantastic adoptive parent? Tell them about North Lincolnshire Adoption.
Adoption and fostering information events take place every month at the Learning Development Centre in Scunthorpe from 5.30pm to 8pm for people to find out more details. They are on:
- 9 January 2019
- 13 February 2019
- 13 March 2019
- 10 March 2019
For more information about becoming an adoptive parent, call 01724 297024, email adoption@northlincs.gov.uk or go to the Adoption page
