Welcome to the March issues of the AIS Direct newsletter.

The snow has taken many of us by surprise and caused some disruption to council services. Keep informed by visiting the council website.

Be a good neighbour and keep a check on older relatives and neighbours who may find it difficult to get out and about.

In this issue, you have an opportunity to win an annual pass to Normanby Hall simply by answering a few questions in our survey.

Previous copies of the newsletters are available on the Adult Information Hub website.

Keep warm and well

winter

North Lincolnshire Council is urging residents to keep warm and well during this extreme cold spell, and look after their health – especially those most at risk, as the cold weather and freezing temperatures set in.

If you are aware of a neighbour, friend, or relative who is over 65 or has a long-term condition, and may find it difficult to get out, check that they are warm, well and their medicine cabinet and food supplies are stocked up. Having some company may also reduce social isolation.

The NHS Stay Well This Winter campaign gives advice on being prepared for winter.

There is also the NHS 111 service. This is a free number to call when you have an urgent healthcare need. It directs you to the right local service, first time. It is available across the whole of England making it easier for you to access urgent healthcare services when you need medical help. It is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

You can find advice on winter health and keeping warm on the winter health pages. To find out more about support and activities for older adults, visit the Adult Information Hub website.

Free Health Check

health check

What is an NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is a health check-up for adults in England aged 40-74. It's designed to spot early signs of stroke, kidney disease, heart disease, type 2 diabetes or dementia. As we get older, we have a higher risk of developing one of these conditions. An NHS Health Check helps find ways to lower this risk.

If you're in the 40-74 age group without a pre-existing condition, you can expect to receive a letter from your GP or local authority inviting you for a free NHS Health Check every five years.

Read the NHS Health check leaflet for more information.

March - Prostate Cancer Awareness Month

Prostate cancer

Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men, and this March, for Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, men are being encouraged to be aware of the symptoms and not to shy away from any symptoms they have.

North Lincolnshire Council and Humberside Fire and Rescue Service have joined forces to back this campaign and raise awareness.

Prostate cancer is the third most common cancer in North Lincolnshire, potentially affecting an estimated one in six men.

Nearly a quarter of all new cancer diagnoses in males are prostate cancer.

Each year an average of 120 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in North Lincolnshire.

Most diagnoses are in men aged 50 and over, with more than half of cases diagnosed in males aged 70 and above.

Read more on the council website or visit the Prostate Cancer UK website.

Contact the Elderly are a national charity who organise free monthly tea parties for older guests, and are currently looking for guests for new groups in Grimsby and Scunthorpe.

Volunteer Drivers Needed

cares support

If you can spare a couple of hours each week to help drive our carers to peer support groups, training and meetings then we would like to hear from you. You will be helping the Carers' Support Service by providing a friendly face and support to enable a carer to get out of the house and have a much needed break from their caring role.

Expenses are paid at 40p per mile and you would need a clean driving licence and a DBS check which the Carers' Support Service will pay for. Safeguarding training must be attended once a year.

If you would like to volunteer, please call Sharon Wright on 01652 650585.

The Carers Support Service is base at 11 Redcombe Lane, Brigg, North Lincolnshire, DN20 8AU

Visit their website for lots of useful information for carers.

Services join forces for BBC Civilisations

Colossi

North Lincolnshire Libraries, North Lincolnshire Museum and 20:21 Visual Arts Centre are joining forces this March to mark BBC Civilisations. This season of programmes and events aims to get us all thinking about our shared and varied cultural identities, and here in North Lincolnshire we need your help to create a pop-up exhibition.

Get involved...

On Saturday 10 March, the library service will be putting on show some curiosities from its collections, but we need you to complete it. Bring along an object that reflects your relationship to North Lincolnshire, and it will be featured in our exhibition for a day. We would also love it if you were willing to record a short video on the day, or write a short explanation, of why your object is important.

The exhibition, “Treasured Belongings”, is at 20:21 Visual Arts Centre on Saturday 10 March between 10am and 4pm.

Chat about the headlines

newspapers

Do you have something to say about the newspaper headlines?  Perhaps you enjoy talking about what is in the papers with other people, and listening to what they have to say.  Why not stimulate your mind with some lively debate.

Current affairs do not have to be boring or stuffy.  Airing your views on whatever is in the public eye can be fun and light-hearted as well as thought-provoking.

Drop in to our Newschat at the Central Library for lively debate about current affairs and whatever else the papers have to say.

Please note that Newschat will meet at The Base while the main Central Library is being refurbished, every Thursday morning from 10.30am to 12 noon.
