New Exhibitions at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre

We have a flurry of new exhibitions and events in the coming weeks, including Chinese jewellery, large-scale installation, Museums at Night and the return of our popular Flowers in the Gallery event. There is something to suit all tastes, so why not come along and see what we have to offer?


23 April to 16 July

To Draw Is To Be Human 

To Draw is To Be Human brings together the work of five artists that have drawing at the centre of their practice; Andy Black (pictured), Kate Black, Tracy Himsworth, Lucy O’Donnell, Sally Taylor present drawing, sculpture and video in works exploring narrative, construction, gesture and mapping.

 

23 April to 16 July

Becky Fawcett - People Watching

Becky Fawcett's exhibition features over 70 drawings of people going about their everyday lives in Doncaster, Scunthorpe, Goole and Grimsby, the selection of characters is varied, humorous and thought provoking. You may even recognise yourself in one of Becky's works!   

 

30 April to 11 June

Paul Crook - Northern Routes

Finally Paul Crook's paintings depict urban and suburban environments, rendered in a saccharin palate of colours - bringing new life to bland and everyday urban landscapes that echo the Modernist utopian architectural visions of the past.

Vote 20-21! Bring Bedwyr Williams to Scunthorpe

For the forth year in a row 20-21 have been short-listed in the national Connect! competition to hold a one-off event by a well-known artist.We are only one only two venues to win the competition twice in a row, and would love to make it three! Connect has in the past brought us spectacular events by Jessica Voorsanger and Cullinan Richards.

 

Voting begins on 29 April and this year we're in the running to hold an event by Welsh installation and performance artist Bedwyr Williams.

Jewellery by Bifei Cao

The Other Mountain: Contemporary Chinese Jewellery

From 30 April to 9 July we are delighted to be hosting The Other Mountain, a National Centre for Craft and Design touring exhibition, featuring stunning objects from some of China's leading Jewellery designers. 

 

Curated by Norman Cherry and Wang Kezhen the exhibition focusses on internationalism within contemporary Chinese jewellery, many of whose makers studied abroad before returning home. 

 

The show features exquisite works in gold, silver, pearl and jade, as well as less traditional materials such as baby formula, plastic bags and fishing wire. 

 

Artists: Bifei Cao, Xiang Dai, Ming Gu, Xin Guo, Jun Hu, Xiaowang Huang, Qian Jiang, Xiao Liu, Honggang Lu, Xianou Ni, Jie Sun, Fei Teng, Zhenghong Wang, Chungang Wang, Kezhen Wang, Man Yang and Fan Zhang

Liz West - Our Colour Reflection

Manchester based artist Liz West has wowed audiences across the UK with her spectacular installations that use light and colour. Supported by a grant from Arts Council England, Liz has made a spectacular new large-scale work using over 700 coloured mirrors to project coloured light up into the roof of the church.

Museums at Night

Once again we open our doors after hours for the national or Museums at Night event. 20-21 invites visitors to a special preview of Liz West's spectacular installation after dark. Meet Liz west, try a rainbow cocktail and see new projection artworks by Gillian Hobson (from 9pm).  

 

24 May to 28 May 

Flowers in the Gallery

Our popular event returns featuring spectacular displays from some of the regions leading Flower Arrangers. This year participants have been challenged to make coloured work in response to Liz West's Our Colour Reflection exhibition.

Peacock at Normanby Hall Country Park

 

News from Normanby Hall Country Park: Splashpad, Victorian Vogue and annual passes 

The summer season at our partners Normanby Hall Country Park is well under way. The Hall and Farming Museum are open and the Splashpad is turned on for when the weather heats up! When visiting the park don't miss the costume exhibition on the first floor of the Hall which this year features 'Victorian Vogue', a display of pieces from their costume collection documenting the changes in fashion from 1840's to 1890's. 

 

Annual passes allow entry to the park until March 2017 and can be purchased at the park and online and prices start at only £15.50. Visit the website for more information. 

 

 


Opening hours at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre: The galleries, activities and shop at 20-21 Visual Arts Centre are open Tuesday to Saturday 10am to 4pm (closed Sunday and Monday). Our cafe is open 10am to 3pm (hot food until 2pm).
