More sites agreed for new council homes

Further sites for new council houses have been approved and will drive forward our ambitious building plans to deliver 5000 new, affordable, council homes by 2035.

Our plans support the local economy by creating new jobs, regenerating local communities and transforming our town centres into vibrant multi-use spaces – all part of the council’s vision to make North Lanarkshire ‘The Place to Live’.

The sites identified and agreed are:

  • The former Cumbernauld Village Primary School. This site, comprising approximately 8 homes, will support and complement the development of the new Early Learning Centre.
  • The former Police Station at Main Street, Glenboig, will include approximately 6 homes, including specialist wheelchair provision.
  • YMCA and Brandon Street, Motherwell, a town centre project, will accommodate approximately 49 homes.
  • King Street, Wishaw, a town centre project, comprising approximately 16 homes.
  • Garnqueen Farm, Main Street, Glenboig – approximately 15 homes ‘off the shelf’ purchase.

In support of the new homes we’re building we’re also ensuring we maximise the number of affordable homes available for our tenants. We’re doing this by way of our buy back scheme which has already seen 396 homes made available and our Development Pathfinder approach which allows us purchase new build homes directly from developers.  https://www.northlanarkshire.gov.uk/index.aspx?articleid=35117
