Severe weather update, Tuesday 16 January

Bookmark and Share

The Met Office has issued an Amber (Be Prepared) warning, which covers North Lanarkshire, for the period from 1500 today until 0800 tomorrow. The forecast is as follows:

Heavy, squally showers of snow will continue through Tuesday and overnight with longer spells of snow on Tuesday evening. Over the hills, snow will drift in gale force winds. A gradual improvement is likely on Wednesday for most areas. Travel delays on roads are likely, as are public transport cancellations. There is a chance of power cuts while mobile phone coverage may be affected. Some rural communities seem likely to become cut off. Roads and pavements will turn icy, increasing the chances of accidents or injuries.

Following the end of the Amber warning, a Yellow (Be Aware) warning is in place until Friday 19 January.

Roads update

Secondary carriageways have been gritted and ploughed from 1230 today. From 1600, all primary routes will be treated throughout the snow threat.

Primary footways will be treated from 0500 tomorrow.

We concentrate on gritting and clearing primary routes which means that we won’t prioritise most residential streets. It’s essential that we keep the main roads clear and treated and that is our first priority. Once we have finished one treatment of main roads, we often have to start again on them immediately, particularly if it rains.

Home support

Home support operations continue as normal.

Housing repairs

Housing repairs are operating on an emergency-only basis, based on normal practice during an Amber warning.

Schools

We expect all schools to be be open tomorrow. However, all ASN buses operated directly by the council have been cancelled. We expect significant disruption to other school transport tomorrow morning based on the forecast.

Other facilities

All outdoor pitches operated by Culture NL have been cancelled until Friday 19th. All NL Leisure indoor facilities are running as normal, with all outdoor provision for this evening cancelled.
