Dear Parent/Carer,
Today, our school will close for the October break and over the past few weeks it is evident that there is a great deal of opportunity for our young people to get involved in a wide range of activities within the school; examples of which you will read about. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all staff for the work that they undertake within the school, it is greatly appreciated. Similarly, I would like to thank those that contribute to learning and activities beyond the classroom as this clearly enriches the 'St Maurice's experience' for our young people. Thanks also to our young people for the contributions that they make to the life and work of the school and within their communities. Enjoy the break and come back refreshed and ready to meet the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. Within the school we have much to celebrate and we are excited about the remainder of the session and what we can achieve as a community. I hope everyone enjoys an enjoyable and restful week and I look forward to seeing everyone again when school re-opens on Monday 23rd of October at 8.55am.
Kind regards
Mr McParland
 We
celebrated our Patronal Feast Day on Thursday 21st September. S1, S3 and S5/6 came together in the afternoon
to celebrate Mass at 2pm with Bishop Toal being the principal celebrant along
with our associated parish priests. Fr.
John Mulholland offered mass in the morning for pupils in S2 and S4.

Rachel
Brown and Caitlin Miller, both S5, represented St Maurice's in the 'Investing
in Diversity' conference held in Edinburgh BICC by Future Asset. Both girls were a credit to the school.
Lessons from Auschwitz Project. Tegan McEwan
(S6) and Caitlin Miller (S5) visited Auschwitz, Poland, on Tuesday 3rd
October as part of the Lessons from Auschwitz Project. The girls took part in a one day visit to
Poland along with over 200 pupils from various schools across Scotland. They will now undertake their own project
within the school in order to share their experiences.

In September we celebrated languages all week with S1 and S2 throughout the
school. On Tuesday afternoon, S1 watched
a Spanish film about child soldiers.
Staff in English, Drama and Social Subjects agreed to do a follow-up
lesson on the issues in the film. On
Thursday afternoon, S2 had a "Who Wants To Be A Europeanaire" Quiz in
the Assembly Hall. The Maths department
delivered Maths lessons in French, Italian, German and Spanish and in music pupils learnt Italian musical terms.
As
part of the European Day of Languages celebrations, S2 pupils ran the school’s Bistro 76 on Friday 29th
September. A range of French, Spanish
and Italian dishes were served to fellow pupils. Menus for the Bistro were designed during
Business and IT lessons and pupils had to order their food in the language
appropriate to their meal. Pupils
learned a wide range of practical, team building and communication skills as
well as practicing their foreign language skills.

S2
pupils attended a trip to Manchester on Tuesday 26th September. Pupils were given a tour of Manchester
United’s stadium at Old Trafford before going on to the Etihad Stadium to watch
Manchester City win 2 – 0 against Shakhtar Donetsk as part of the Champions League
group stages. The trip was a
massive success! Our pupils were the
perfect ambassadors for St. Maurice's and their behaviour was exemplary
throughout what was undoubtedly a long day.
Many thanks to all staff who assisted with planning the trip and
supervising pupils throughout the day.
Everyone on the trip had a great time!

A group of seven volunteers from Virgin Media Business, based in Strathclyde Business Park, Bellshill,
joined a group of pupils from St. Maurice's High School to support us in
creating and building a new chicken coup to host up to 10 free range chickens,
a St. Maurice's Orchard containing 10 fruit trees, and a pollination corridor
in advance of us creating a new area for our St. Maurice's honey bees. The £3000 funding for the project has been
provided from the Education Scotland, Food for Thought, Phase 5, grant.
Michelle from the Scottish Bee Association visited St. Maurice's on
Tuesday 10th October. She
delivered workshops throughout the day for a range of classes/students. Michelle also very kindly agreed to meet with
staff over lunch to answer any questions regarding any apprehensions anyone had,
the logistics of hosting honey bees and/or any other relevant questions. The project benefits the curriculum in a
number of ways where S1 RE are studying the importance of bees and pollination in the
continued survival of mankind; the Horticulture class will be specifically
interested in the additional SQA Bee Keeping course and all subjects related to
honey production and bees wax products etc.; Home Economics will be studying the
journey of food and all other food related topics and S3 Biology classes are focusing
on the environmental issues.
This fun packed family event is being held on Monday 16th October from 10am
-1pm in St Maurice's High School. S1
pupils and their parents are invited to come along, allowing you and your child
the chance to become more familiar with the school and have lots of FUN
at the same time. We intend to show
photographs of our new S1’s from the start of term until now which we’re sure
you would love to see. We also intend to
find out what parents/guardians would like in terms of support to you and your
child now that they are in S1. If you’d
like any further information, please do not hesitate to call Julie Parker, Home
School Partnership Officer, on 01236 794845.

October at 12 o’clock Mass. Thanks to all parishioners for a warm welcome and
also to our senior students who have assisted Mr. McParland by giving
information leaflets to parishioners at the end of Mass.

October to raise money for Mak Merry and to complete their Healthy Living unit
of work. They cycled along the canal

moneystill to be collected. The pupils

in the following activities: Dance, Fitness, Judo/Tae Kwon Do,
