It has been a busy term with a number of events taking place. I’m glad to report that our pupils have continued to work hard and achieved much both in and out of class. We were delighted to honour all our prize winners at the annual Award Ceremony and Sports’ Day last week.We wish all our staff and pupils a restful and enjoyable summer break and look forward to welcoming you all back in August together with our impressive group of new S1s.
Our annual Awards Ceremony took place at Calderhead Erskine Parish Church in Shotts on Wednesday, 21st June. The ceremony was attended by pupils, staff and family and friends and the guest speaker was Dr Fiona Menzies, a former pupil who lectures at the University of the West of Scotland. Dr Menzies gave an inspirational speech and made us laugh as she recalled her first day at Calderhead High School. We were delighted to recognise so many of our pupils for their academic prowess and wider achievements. Thank you to everyone involved in the ceremony, especially all our talented performers, and Jordan and Andrew, who provided excellent technical support. More details are available on the school website.
On Wednesday, 31 May, eight teams from S1 to S3 participated in the Calderhead House Challenge to gain points for each House. Forty pupils took part in seven different events including: the Calderhead Cake Off; Fancy Dress; the Marble Challenge; the Paper Chain and Paper Tower Challenges; the Portrait Painting task: and the Puzzle Solving mission. The event was a great success and after a huge amount of effort and excellent team work, Lochhead House emerged as the victors. A huge congratulations to Lochhead House and a big thanks to all the staff for their help and pupils from Burns, Fleming, Lochhead and Wallace Houses for their participation in the event

The Scottish Book Trust’s Bookbug gifts book bags to every child in Scotland and runs free song and rhymes sessions for families with babies and young children. Bookbug’s Big Giggle Week took place recently and our S4 Achieve Group joined in the fun by reading to the Nursery children at Shotts Family Learning Centre. We very much promote reading for pleasure at Calderhead High School and it was great to see the Nursery children enjoying the stories.

Well done to S2 pupils, Matthew and Amber, who prepared an insightful and informative assembly designed to raise deaf awareness. Matthew and Amber presented the assembly to all year groups and staff in the Assembly Hall. |
Quantum Theatre presented a performance of their show “Your Country Needs You” to pupils in S1, S2, and S3 in the Assembly Hall on Friday 2 June 2017. This play explores the politics behind the outbreak of the war through to the Battle of the Somme, using sketches and vignettes to follow the fate of a ‘Pals’ Battalion leaving England’s shores for the fields of Northern France. It was a moving and thought-provoking performance. |
