NLYC Prioritise Child Protection

North Lanarkshire Youth Council members have recently completed an Introduction to Child Protection training. NLYC members have voted to work in partnership with the Child Protection Committee to increase awareness of child abuse and sexual exploitation amongst local young people.  Using a peer education approach, NLYC members will now deliver youth work sessions using appropriate materials to raise awareness of this issue,  use social media and promote positive images of young people.   In addition, the Child Protection Committee has agreed to fund a resource of useful information which NLYC will distribute during their engagement sessions. You can read NLYC's latest newsletter here.

Spotlight on...

Ciara

Ciara Fullarton, MSYP representing the Motherwell and Wishaw Constituency.

I was elected in March of this year and I am currently serving my first term in the Scottish Youth Parliament.

Since being elected I have already had a variety of exciting opportunities! Over the last month all of the Members of the Scottish Youth Parliament (SYP) throughout North Lanarkshire have been working hard to encourage our constituents to complete the ‘Lead the Way’ consultation. I have spoken to pupils attending a local summer school and I was enthused by their eagerness to contribute to the shaping of the SYP's manifesto.

At the beginning of this month I worked with my local youth forum in Wishaw & Shotts to successfully hosted our own ‘Summer Tea Party’, an event promoting the positive work of our youth forum in order to attract new members. I am also very fortunate to have recently completed an ‘Introduction to Child Protection’ which was an opportunity made possible to me through North Lanarkshire’s Youth Council. Both myself and my fellow NLYC members are eager to raise further awareness of the necessity of child protection throughout North Lanarkshire and across Scotland.

I look forward to the following months with the Scottish Youth Parliament!
