NECS Research & Evidence Team Update |
|
Welcome to the team Hamdi Hamzah
Hi, I'm Hamdi, Research and Evaluation Co-ordinator. I developed a career in human resources before deciding to focus on applied research with the goal of creating impact in healthcare services. I have a special interest in programmes or initiatives that improve individuals' mental health and wellbeing.
I completed a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and a Master of Science in Psychology of Mental Health at the University of Edinburgh. I have experience in mixed-method approaches which include conducting experimental studies, rapid reviews and one-to-one interviews or focus groups. Prior to joining NECS, I worked at Durham University where I collaborated with a commercial partner to expand the reach of behaviour change research in the domain of professional development. In addition, through my work in human capital consultancy, I gained experience in organisational development, workforce planning, change management, communication and training across several industries. I also enjoy trying out new recipes at home and going for a swim.
I look forward to bringing my skills and experience to the Research and Evidence team and building these skills further to support healthcare commissioners and professionals with research and evaluation

NIHR Work and Health Research Development
Date : Thursday, 15 December from 2 - 4pm
The National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) is hosting a virtual event to bring together researchers and interested stakeholders in work and health research. This event is an opportunity to discuss priorities for research in work and health, introduce the planned NIHR Work and Health Development Awards and discuss how the NIHR could further support the work and health community. This will also be an opportunity to network amongst the community and with aligned health and social care researchers. Further details and registration are here
Shared Safety Net Action Plan (SSNAP) project
There is an opportunity to contribute to the development the Shared Safety Net Action Plan (SSNAP) tool, which aims to support patients and GPs in managing the safety netting of a suspected cancer diagnosis (see attached flyer for more info). This project is being led by a team in the Yorkshire Quality and Safety Research group, as part of the NIHR funded Patient Safety Translation Research Centre. Each practice that participates will receive a flat fee of £800 for involvement.
Involvement will include a workshop, small group or individual discussions, depending on the needs of your practice. Background to the project, key findings, and the SSNAP prototype will first be presented, followed by seeking the views of both clinical and non-clinical staff (including GPs, Nursing staff and Healthcare Assistants, Practice Managers and Administrative staff) about user needs and implementation requirements for a digital SSNAP. This information will then be used to refine the SSNAP prototype, ready for testing in practice in subsequent research.
Please do get in touch with Hannah (hannah.hartley@bthft.nhs.uk) if you are interested in your practice being involved, or have any questions about the research.

Research and Evidence Training |
|
The Research and Evidence Team provide a range of training sessions to help people develop their understanding of using evidence and conducting service evaluations. These sessions are all delivered remotely using Microsoft Teams. Our currently available sessions are advertised and bookable on the NECS Learning Website.
Introduction to Research and Evidence
This session is aimed at staff who need to use evidence in their role, and need a working knowledge of the different types of evidence and research studies in order to appraise the evidence they find (e.g., when commissioning services, evaluating services). This session is an ideal precursor to “Finding Evidence” and “Appraising Evidence”.
Finding Evidence
If you want to know how and where to find evidence, this is the session for you. We will explain how to develop a search strategy and know where to access research papers. This session will have a practical focus on searching for relevant evidence. Attendees are asked to get an OpenAthens account prior to attending. Details of how to do this will be sent out in advance.
Appraising Evidence
This is a workshop session giving people the tools and techniques to enable critical appraisal of evidence, to include both qualitative and quantitative research papers. It is equally aimed at staff needing to use evidence in their role, and those who are developing a research project. Attendees are welcome to bring evidence which they would like to appraise to the session.
Designing and Carrying out an Evaluation
This session will define what is meant by evaluation and the important role it has in a healthcare context. The steps needed to go through to design and complete an evaluation project will be discussed. Evaluations could range from evaluation of a small administrative change, such as telephone answering times at one GP surgery, to a new patient service and ICS policy. Practical tips, tools and resources will be shared as well as how the R&E Team can support you.
Questionnaire Development
This session is aimed at staff who may need to develop questionnaires as part of their role, and need a working knowledge of how to design, share and interpret evidence from a questionnaire. It is also suitable for those who may want to develop a research idea involving use of a questionnaire. It is a useful follow-up to the Research and Evidence Team’s ‘Designing and Carrying Out an Evaluation’ training session. The session will give people the opportunity to discuss their experience of delivering and/or completing questionnaires and ask questions.
Upcoming training date for Questionnaire Development: 17th January 2023, 9-11am
Bespoke Training
Bespoke training sessions can also be provided specific to organisational and team needs. To request a bespoke training package, please contact us at necsu.reteam@nhs.net.
